Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    11:00am

Shane stood at the counter and signed the last form and initialed it in two places.  The woman behind the counter handed her the keys and the contract folded into a narrow envelope.  "Thank you for doing business with Avis.  If you have any problems, please feel free to contact us.  Here are your keys.  Go straight through the door and you’ll find your car in Space 712."

"Okay," Shane said and stuck the envelope in her backpack.  "Thanks a lot."  She turned and walked toward and out the automatic doors, pulling her phone out of her front pocket at the same time.   She pressed the #1 and speed-dialed Carmen.

    "Hi, baby."

"Hey," Shane said as she pulled her large backpack higher onto her shoulder.

    "You’re in Oregon?"

"About twenty minutes ago.  I just left the Avis counter.  I’ll be driving the very hip, Chevrolet Cobalt."

    "A Cobalt.  What is that?"

Shane’s eyes landed on Space 712.  "Uh, it’s the car I’ll be picking Shay up from soccer practice in.  I can’t imagine anything that would scream soccer mom more except for a Mini-van."

    "Why’d ya get that?"

"I wanted a Trailblazer, but they were out.  It’s fine.  I mean, I’m not up here to style."

Shane got into the car, dropped her backpack in the passenger’s seat and noticed the vehicle owner’s manual that had been left on the dashboard.  She tossed it into the back as if it were some annoyance in her life.  She heard it bounce off the seat and looked back to see it fall open onto the floor, the pages bending back.  A light mist fell on this quintessential Oregon day as Shane started the ignition, adjusted the mirrors, and backed out of the space.

Carmen said, "So you have all of the information my cousin gave you, right?  You have to be cool and act like you’re doing your Dad a favor.  Low-ball him, remember.  Tell him that his wife is messed up and he’d be free to just walk away if you took Shay.  First, you’ve got to convince him to put the wife in rehab.  She might give you some shit about taking Shay or ask for even more money.  I think Gabe will take your offer and just be glad to be done with it."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
