    Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    "What if he doesn’t take it?"

    "He’s broke.  He’s got squat and no j-o-b.  He’ll take $2,000.00.  You’ve just got to get him to sign off.  We can’t have him showin’ up at our door asking for more every month."

    Shane pulled her cigarettes from the side pocket of the backpack and placed them on the seat.  "Right.  Right."  She drove down the lane to the exit kiosk.

    "Just be cool.  Act like it doesn’t matter to you one way or another."

    "All right.  I’ll call you later and let you know."

    "Hopefully, you’ll have Shay with you.  Good luck, baby.  I’ll light a veladora for you and pray to Our Lady of Guadalupe."

    Shane could picture Carmen lighting the tall candle in the glass jar with the watchful eye of Lupe looking down at her.    There were six veladoras on one of the bookshelves now.  It was just one of dozens of changes in their house.  This one, Shane didn’t mind.  She could use all the help she could get, so if Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe wanted to lend a hand, who was she to discount it.

    Once the automatic exit arm lifted, Shane drove out of the parking lot.  She put her foot on the brake, grabbed the pack of cigarettes she had thrown on the seat, and pushed in the car lighter.

    In a few minutes she’d be pulling up at her ne’er-do-well father’s house.

    * * * * *

    Tina and Stephanie were seated at a table against the wall and in the corner that provided some seclusion and privacy.  In a few minutes it would be time to feed Angelica.

    Coffee and a bagel, Norwegian smoked salmon, capers, tomatoes, onions, and cream cheese had been placed in front of Stephanie.  Tina’s breakfast was large and consisted of a platter of a big Middle American meal—two eggs over medium, two slices of turkey bacon, and organic multi-grain toast.  She also had a small glass of Ruby Red grapefruit juice and a large glass of milk.  The glass of milk was three-quarters empty.  Tina was eating and looked up at Stephanie.  “Why aren’t you eating?  You’ve hardly even nibbled.”

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
