Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 31 (Conclusion and Epilogue)

“Well, you know you had something to do with it,” Kit said.

“Me?  I don’t see how.  Playing the guitar?  You could have gotten any studio musician to do that for you.  I am proud to be associated with the music, though.  So proud of you, baby.”

Kit felt her eyes begin to water.  Crying wasn’t something that came easy for her.  She could release anger without a second’s thought and could show sadness, but actually shedding tears was hard for her.  She had howled when Melvin had died, but that was emotion that had been stored up for decades.  Seeing Angus’ joy made happy tears fall from her eyes.  “You-you gave me the confidence.  I couldn’ta done it without you.”

“Yeah, you could’ve.  The time was right for you to bust out and come back.  The world was ready for Kit Porter again.  Oh, baby.  Oh, baby.”  He picked her up again and twirled once more.

When he placed her back on solid ground, she looked at him and said softly, “I love you.”  Those words were rolling off their tongues now.  Ever since Dana and Alice’s wedding almost a year ago, when Angus declared his love, they easily said it during lovemaking, when ending telephone conversations or saying goodbye to run their separate errands.  Kit felt like a different person with him.

“Shane, are we going to be next door all daaaaay looooong?”  Shay drew out the last three words of his question so that it sounded like a whine.  He was sitting next to Shane on the sofa.

His half-sister/guardian had grown used to that voice that he put on when he wanted his way.  The first few months he had lived with her and Carmen, they had given in to him when he had asked for something in that tone.  Now, they were both used to it and used to ignoring it.

“Huh?  Are we?” he whined again.

Shane was staring at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade that was being televised, but she wasn’t paying much attention to it.  She had been simply vegging for the past ninety minutes—something that was rare for her these days.  Her hours at Wax were long because her income had to support herself and Shay not to mention parenting had its own set of responsibilities that cut into all free time.  She or Carmen or both showed up at soccer games, stayed up late with Shay working on his science project, sat with him doing homework in the evening, and attended monthly PTA meetings.  Shane didn’t want to do it, but she felt that she had signed up for that when she agreed to take care of him.  Regardless of her personal desire, she had to woman-up and be responsible.  The first month he was living in LA, they were also awakened at two in the morning with a forlorn Shay standing at the side of their bed.  He had wet the bed and needed his sheets changed.  That sent them to the pediatrician who informed them that it was a normal reaction to his change in situation and that he expected him to grow out of it quickly once he became comfortable in his new surroundings.  Three weeks later, Shay had broken his arm skateboarding and they were back in the pediatrician’s office.  When it came to shopping, Carmen took him to buy socks, underwear, and jeans, while Shane came home with youth sized kingpin bowling shirts, retro T-shirts, horizontally-striped Polos, and black retro, button-down, panel shirts.  Shay wanted Cap’n Crunch, Fruit Loops, and Frosted Flakes.  Shane constantly asked herself ‘what should a parent do?’  She bought Shredded Wheat, Kix, and Chex.  She cut down on her beer intake and she and Carmen relaxed with reefer only when Shay was away for the night at a sleepover.

    1. Portia, congrats on finishing this epic! I will always be a fan, and I was very happy to be one of the people to encourage you, and who knows–maybe you’ll have another fanfic in you that will need to come out! You’ve inspired so many of the writers here, so thank you, and I hope we’ll see you around!xoxo

    2. wow what can i say, this story has been the best time and time again and i can say that i’ve enjoyed every bit of it, though I’m extremely sad that this is it for laid up. My favourite couple have obviously been dana and alice, and you’ve written them and their story just perfectly, how it should have been, for me anyway. For every chapter, page and word….THANK YOU PORTIA!!!!!!!!!!! xox

    4. Oh PortiaOnly I can only say a heart felt Thank you for brining us this impressive and comprehensive epic. I have ready this story from the start. It has always amazed me how you wound the pieces of the series into this complete work. I love where you have taken all of them and how it was so true to the characters we have know. Thanks for all you hard work.

    5. Portia, thank you so much for this epic love story. I’m happy that all of the characters are happy and content. The loop holes that the show had created, you have thoroughly patched. That for me is remarkable. Jenny’s death in season 5 and her magazine being thrown in the pool – what can I say, your attention to detail is a gold standard in fanfic. Kudos to you and also Wendy for creating this wonderful story.

    6. Thanks so much for sharing this incredible journey with us. This is one of the best and engaging stories I have ever read. You are an remarkable talent!!

    9. I read this chapter as slowly as I could so that I could savor every word of it. It was worth me taking the time, although I was fully aware that each time I clicked “Next page” I was that much closer to the finish. This was a fantastic end to such a richly layered story. Everyone got their ending, and each and every one of them earned it… the struggles each couple/family had to overcome to get to their happiness made it all the more believable. You didn’t cheat, Portia, not the readers, not the story. This has been such an absolute treat to read, through all the highs and lows, and I’ve loved every single word of it. (And kudos for not forgetting Jenny this chapter! heh) Thank you, Portia, for writing this story and taking us on the journey with you. Take care, and I hope we see another story from you soon.

    11. Hello PortiaOnly, This story has been an absolute joy to read. It has taken much time and dedication from you to create a momentous melodrama. So many of the images and scenes including dialogue where taken from the show and seemlessly interweaved in to your take on events.I stand up and applaud you and your wonderful talent.Thank you ever so much for sharing it with me.Your Loyal Fan.PS – I hope that you continue to write about these characters and post your work here.

    14. PortiaOnly- I hope you receive this message so many years after writing this incredible story but I had to tell you, this is by far one of the most amazing L Word stories I’ve ever read. You did an absolutely remarkable job with this. The story telling, the storyline, the interweaving of the characters, seasons, cannon and AU was beyond incredible. You have amazing talent and I hope to read more of your incredible work. Amazingly done!
