    Bette, Tina, Dana, Alice, Shane, Carmen, Helena, Dylan, Kit, Angus, Peggy, and Marilyn discover what John Lennon said in the song, “Beautiful Boy” is absolutely true: “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”

     

    “I was thinkin’ really early.  With Black Friday and everything, the roads are going to get crazy early.”

     

    Carmen nodded.  Melancholia was setting in and she knew she needed to pull it together.  This was about Shane’s mental health and making her feel bad about leaving would ultimately hurt their relationship.  Carmen smiled.  “I know.  Alice and Dana are going either to The Beverly Center or Westside Pavilion really early.  Alice shops at thrift stores.  Why does she need that mall thing?  And I know this wasn’t Dana’s idea.”

     

    “Yeah, Dana’s fine with a t-shirt and a pair of shorts.”

     

    Carmen looked at the backpack behind her.  “I think you’re right.  You should leave early.  Did you tell Shay?”

     

    “Not yet.  I’ll wake him up   I’ve been in there a couple of times just looking at him.  He’s gotta know that this is for a few days and not about him.”

     

    “He knows you love him.”

     

    “I’m not deserting him.”

     

    Carmen nodded again, fearful that if she spoke her tone would express her truest feelings—she felt deserted. In spite of this ‘little break’ being her idea, she was hurt by Shane’s eager and easy concurrence.   She wrapped the sheet around her body.  She felt exposed—not her body, but her thoughts but she covered what she could.  The sheet was symbolic of the emotional veil she used to hide her feelings.

     

    Shane’s mind had gone to Gabe McCutcheon.  “It just pisses me off completely that we haven’t heard from Gabe since last year.  ‘Is Shay alive?  Does he ask about me?  I wanna come to town and say hi to the little guy.’  Not one fuckin’ call.  What an asswipe.”  Shane was angry about it again.

     

    “Shay’s got a family here with us.  Don’t even think about your Dad.”

     

    Shane nodded her head repeatedly, lost in thought.  She walked to the closet and found a clear zipper cosmetic bag.  She unzipped it and put in the few products that were on the bed.

     

    “So, you decide which way you’re goin’?  South or north?”  Carmen got back into bed and covered herself completely.

     

    “North.  I’m just gonna drive up the ‘1’ and see where it takes me. Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo.  You know, I’ve never seen the Hearst Castle.”

That for me is remarkable. Jenny’s death in season 5 and her magazine being thrown in the pool – what can I say, your attention to detail is a gold standard in fanfic. Kudos to you and also Wendy for creating this wonderful story.

    13. I read this chapter as slowly as I could so that I could savor every word of it. It was worth me taking the time, although I was fully aware that each time I clicked “Next page” I was that much closer to the finish. This was a fantastic end to such a richly layered story. Everyone got their ending, and each and every one of them earned it… the struggles each couple/family had to overcome to get to their happiness made it all the more believable. You didn’t cheat, Portia, not the readers, not the story. This has been such an absolute treat to read, through all the highs and lows, and I’ve loved every single word of it. (And kudos for not forgetting Jenny this chapter! heh) Thank you, Portia, for writing this story and taking us on the journey with you. Take care, and I hope we see another story from you soon.

    18. well after about a month and a half im finally finish with your story and as I wrote you before I truly believe you are a gift to writing and taking readers along for the experience. I had to stop several times for work or sleep but it was well worth the time. I prolonged finishing the last chapter didn’t want t see it end, but like the L word, like tibette chemistry, all good things but come to end….Bravo!! my friend I hope to see a book with your name on it forreal..til next story………

You did an absolutely remarkable job with this. The story telling, the storyline, the interweaving of the characters, seasons, cannon and AU was beyond incredible. You have amazing talent and I hope to read more of your incredible work. Amazingly done!
