Julie’s Ranch

Jess and Kate pulled up just as the sun was starting to set. Julie came out to when she saw pull up to the house.

“Hi Mother.” Kate said getting out of the car. Julie walked over and opened Jess’s door.

“How was the trip?” She asked Jess. Jess got out of the car holding her bear and walked past her not answering.

“Quiet.” Kate said. She walked to the trunk and got out their bags.

“Why don’t we go into the house and eat?” Julie said putting her hand on Jess’s shoulder. Jess jerked away from her and looked into her eyes for the first time since they arrived.

“What in the hell happened?” Julie said loudly. She tried to touch Jess.

“She got hit with a bat at the game today.” Kate said walking up behind Jess. She handed her Mother Jess’s suitcase. Kate and Julie started the house. Jess was hesitant to move.

“Jess come on.” Julie said.

“Here take this. I’ll get her.” Kate handed the bag to Julie and started back to Jess. Julie went into the house.

“Don’t you want to come in.” Kate asked kneeling down in front of Jess.

“I want to go home.” Jess said.

“I know that you don’t want to be here. You are just like Andy. He didn’t like her either, but he did like the rest of us. So why don’t you come in and have fun with the rest of us and try to forget that she is even here.” Kate said.

“I still want to go home.” Jess said affirmatively.

“I compromise with you if you come in we will call Bette after dinner.” Kate said. Jess looked over Kate’s shoulder and smiled. She took over running to Bobby.

“Jess wait.” Kate said. Jess jumped into Bobby’s arms.

“Hey girl where did you get the shiner?” Bobby asked.

“At my game.” Jess said with a smile. Kate walked up to the stable door way where they were standing.

“Hey son. What are you doing here?” Kate said giving Bobby a kiss on the cheek.
