Love in Control – Chapter VIII – Will You Marry Me?

Rian stood up from the bar stool herself when he was well clear, relieved she was apparently playing this role well enough that she wasn’t making an ass of herself, judging by what had just happened with that experienced guy. She signaled to the bartender that she’d order her next drink from one of the tables, and made her way to one of the empty ones, rubbing a finger slowly around the rim of the martini glass of the second cosmo the trader had ordered for her.

As she sipped on her drink, lazily sitting back on the comfortable chair, a hipster approached to ask about joining her. She favored him with a quick nod and small smile in response.

He said he was a philosopher, lately favoring the “PoMo” school of the early nineties, so she surprised him with lines from Habermas, one of the acknowledged pillars of that philosophical movement. He confessed to losing track of time as they debated the merits and demerits of Foucault and other French standard bearers of that movement; he ignored his phone that kept ringing as they talked.  After treating her to another drink, he finally took a call.  He mouthed that it was from an irate friend – the man was upset, he explained to Rian with a slight roll of the eyes, that he was now unforgivably late for a party in a bar in Brooklyn that had the best views of Manhattan from across the East River.  After he hung up, he begged her to join him.

“Um… think I’ll stick to this place, tonight, but thanks,” she demurred.

“What’s the matter? Not your jam?”

“Nah … not tonight, at least.”

He smirked as he downed his drink. “Hit me when you want to party, alright?”  She tucked the napkin he’d scribbled his number on into her evening bag and smiled back.

He looked uncertain, almost torn, about leaving, however. “You seem both too nice and too good at this, Nikki.  I can’t make up my mind, yet, about what you are, and I better go before I find myself in questionable circumstances with you that I won’t be able to explain.”  With a light laugh, she pretended to dismiss him ala Marie Antoinette.  Chuckling, he reached for the hand that was shooing him away.  As he pressed his lips lightly to her hand, Rian thought, when Bette sketched out this role-playing “project” when Rian had called Bette to ask for advice, it had sounded ludicruous. Rian had balked.  “Catch and release?  Me?  I’ll be eaten alive out there, Bette!  It’ll never work.”

    1. Oh, that was absolute worth the long wait!

Fantastic and sexy chapter, wouldn’t mind if you write more B&T in your story.

But Rian and Jade captured my heart, they are a great couple.

      Thanks for the update!

    2. You can be sure that yes, it was worth the wait
      for another fantastic chapter!
My heart always Tibette, however Jade and Rian captivated me.
      The whole universe

    3. Hello everyone. Thanks for taking the time to comment. A few caveats: the story arc for “Love In Control” will not have much Bette/Tina romance, although there will be occasional scenes. Their story is evolving in this book — the evolution will see them in a family unit, rather than as a couple. This particular arc started with scenes in earlier chapters, and will be more central in the next chapters. I think I’ve gone over their romance (exhaustively) in the other books already, anyway, and I really don’t have much more to say about “Tibette” than what I’ve already written in the other books.

I sense that it’s time that they evolve and mature in my stories, as characters, otherwise, their story arc will not make much sense if they remain struck in TiBette-land (at least in my storyline). To be perfectly honest, an evolving, maturing Bette/Tina, in the way I’ve been writing about them, is infinitely more interesting for me to write. I can sense them growing, and it seems to be as part of a family unit: this evolution is more authentic and important in this book than “TiBette.” it’s the other couples, in the meantime, who will be developing their own romances.

In the end this book is about a few kinds of love, what they mean, etc., but make no mistake the evolving Bette/Tina take on love remains the central/anchoring one for this book, particularly as things take a turn in the next chapters.

i may disappoint many of the readers who take the time to click through the pages of this story … I hope they will understand that I really can’t write a story if it’s not something I believe in or can stand behind, or would even want to read myself. I have moved on, and have explored the limits of that particular time in their lives through several books already, and so have the Bette and Tina characters in my storylines. They are different now from who they were in the TiBette version of the earlier books from who they seem to be growing into —

maybe I should re-classify this book to another fandom, different from “L Word” even if Bette and Tina and their family are central characters?

I seem to be raising expectations by slotting this book under “L Word.” And that’s not fair to you, the readers.

    4. While Bette and Tina originally attracted me to your writing, your Jade/Rain and Aerin/Harley characters have captivated me. Their unexplored characters are ripe with endless plot lines. Don’t apologize for the lack of TiBette romance, as your other characters and your writing are rich enough to sustain my appetite for a romantic escape.
