New York Minute – chapter 60

    Bette looked at Tina

    “Meaning ?”

“I wondered why she would lie about that – its not hard to check and I have no idea what someone would gain from that lie “

“Do you have a theory ?” Tina asked

“Not really – I have seen teacher’s lie about their qualifications and back them up with forged papers, I have seen teachers produce false references. I can understand why they do that but to lie about where you were born and brought up – strange “

“Well I am going to be making my own enquires into her as well. I intend to find out as much as I can “

“Has she been bothering you ?”

“No and I intend that it stays that way “ Bette said looking at Tina

“Well I hope that you know that Angie is safe here”

“We do – can I just ask you a question – I am fairly sure I know the answer and please do not take this as slur on your professionalism “

Gabby held up her hand “I will save you the trouble of asking me – there is no way she could have found out anything about where you live or anything like that. When this first happened and you told me what the connection was I got all the staff and teaching assistants together and warned them that they were not to discuss any parent or child in front of her “

    Bette smiled “Thank you “

“I cannot begin to grasp how seeing her must have affected you Tina – but she has not found out anything about Angie or her parents or any other child and their parents “

Gabby looked at her watch “I better go inside and start my day “

Bette held out her hand “Thank you “

They both shook hands with the headmistress before walking out of the gates

“You okay ?” Bette asked Tina

    “I still feel sick “

“That’s understandable enough – she is going to be safe – they will take care of her. What matters to me right at this moment is you “

“I will get over it “

“Its not a dose of the flu – you do not get over what happened in a few days – it is going to take time and patience and you not being harsh on yourself “

“I feel like my past has caught up with me “

“You didn’t do anything wrong “

“Tell the rest of the Kennard’s that “

“I will if they ever dare to show their faces “

Tina sighed and took Bette’s hand. They set off walking together – Tina was still anxious –looking at people who past them – checking that no one around them was her sister

“I get these crazy thoughts “ Tina said after they had walked in silence for a few minutes

“I know the feeling “ Bette said

“I woke up about a week ago and I was sure that the only way to be safe – to know that no one would hurt Angie or you or me was to run away “

Bette didn’t speak – Tina was silent then spoke

“I just want the two most important girls in my life to be safe “

“I want all four of the girls in my life to be safe and that includes me “

    Tina squeezed Bette’s hand “That’s what I meant “

“I know – but running away will not solve anything babe – and anyway- why on earth should we run anywhere – we haven’t done anything wrong. If we left New York it could be for a lot of reasons but just because that pathetic halfwit knows that you and I live in New York and have a daughter is not one of them. I ran away five years ago and I missed seeing my wife pregnant and seeing my child being born and changing her diaper like Shane was talking about this morning. We don’t run Tina – we might make her run if she crosses our path but we are not running “

    1. Thanks for the update AllyE. Great chapter. Hope that sister does not show her face anytime soon, in fact, hope those people leave the area period. Tina being with Bette for a few days will help her a lot and make her feel much more safe. Shane being with them will also help everyone feel safer, especially Tina. Congrats on reaching another milestone, that’s fantastic. Kudos.

    2. So glad you posted this story today. My favorite couple from one of my favorite authors! Can’t get any better. And on your day of celebration, “Enjoy life today, it is not a dress rehearsal.” Congratulations!

    3. Something tells me those are fighting words…and Bette will have a chance to back them up. Hopefully i’m wrong. CONGRATS on the two year mark! that is awesome!! *high five*

    4. Glad Angie is back at school with her little friends. The exchange between her and Shane was funny. Hopefully Tina fears are not warranted and her sister does not know where they live and if she does hopefully with Bette by her side, they will give he a beat down. You know all of a sudden I have a sinking feeling that Shane is going to accidently allow Tina’s sister into their lives. I will stay tune.

    5. Congratulations on your 2 year milestone! Keep it up one day at a time. Also, this was a great update. This still is my favorite of the 4 you have going right now. Thank you!

    6. I missed seriously this story!!! I love it to the top of everything!!!! Bette and Tina, so much love, so much respect, wow wow wow!!! Thanks for the update!!!
