“Well not without eating first, why don’t you ask everyone what they are in the mood for” Bette asked with a big smile.

Laurel knew that when Bette asked her staff what they wanted to eat it meant two things: one, she was gonna do the cooking for everybody and two; she was extremely delighted at how everything was going. And if Chef Porter was happy, everybody was happy.

Bette wasn’t temperamental in the kitchen, but she was a perfectionist and she demanded nothing but the best from her staff. That was why she carefully selected her employees. She knew each and every single one of their strengths and weaknesses, so when she had to organize her kitchen it was more like a chess game for her. Plus she knew how to keep her staff happy and content.

Laurel smiled broadly at her boss and went station by station negotiating a menu that was fast, tasty and within the boundaries of the variety of food they had brought for themselves. Two hours later everybody was sitting around a very large table that was at the back of the kitchen, separated from it by a wall. Everybody was there: from the sous-chef to the cleaning staff. And Bette had cooked for everyone.

“This is so good Chef Porter, I never knew hamburgers and French fries could taste this good” The head of the waitresses said and Bette broadly smiled at her. After all the years Bette had been a top chef, she still took great pleasure on just cooking for people’s joy. She had won many awards and was still the youngest chef to ever achieve some of those awards, but nothing gave her more satisfaction than to cook for people’s pleasure, not personal glory or money.

“Well I’m happy that you like it” Bette said but was quickly interrupted by someone entering her kitchen and calling for her. “I’ll see who that is” She said quickly getting up.

“Oh Mrs. and Mr. Robbins! What do I owe the pleasure of your visit?” Bette said shaking hands with the old couple that had hired her.

“Oh we just came by to thank you Chef Porter. Everybody was extremely pleased with your food tonight, it was soooo good!” Kelly’s mother replied with a broad smile.

“I’m glad to hear that, but you should also thank my team. Everything is ready for tomorrow, so you have nothing to worry about” Bette said with a reassuring smile.

“Oh we know that! We just came to let you know on behalf of all our guests tonight that your food was simply exceptional. But the real reason for our visit is my wife. She is dying to find out the recipe of that chocolate dessert” Mr. Robbins joked but he really meant it.

“Well I’ll be happy to give you that recipe Mrs. Robbins” Bette said smiling at the old couple. She wasn’t like some other chefs that were very jealous of their creations and would never give people their recipes. Bette had understood that there was a big difference between home cooking and restaurant cooking. “And Mrs. Robbins… trust me, you don’t want to miss the pancakes we’ll be serving tomorrow for breakfast” Bette winked at the older lady.
