Shane and Molly: A Love Story Chapters 1-6

“No, I’m sorry for not being the kind of friend you deserve.”

“I don’t want to hear it, Bette. I know what you think of me and that’s all I need to know. I’m good enough to have a few drinks with. I’m good enough to help you clean up your fvcking messes. But apparently, that’s all I’m good for.”

“Shane, please, I’m sorry. You know that’s not what I think about you.”

“I don’t believe that.” Shane then turns around, picks up the box she dropped and walks inside.

Bette sighs and looks around. “Fvck,” she whispers to herself. She starts to head back to her house, but stops. She bends down and picks up a box and carries it into Shane’s house. “Where do you want this?” she calls out from the hallway.

Molly and Shane emerge from Shane’s bedroom, surprised to see Bette standing there with a box of Molly’s pictures. “I thought I told you we didn’t need any help,” Shane says bitterly.

“Yeah, that’s what you said.” Bette pauses, but then continues, “But a real friend is always there to help out, even when they insist they don’t need it. So, where do you want this?”

Shane sighs, defeated, and says, “In the bedroom.”

Bette nods and walks confidently past Shane and Molly. They turn to look at each other and shake their heads. Laughing, they head back out to get some more boxes.

Bette has placed the box of pictures on Shane’s bed. She is just about to walk out of the room when something catches her eye. It’s a picture of someone. Bette takes a few steps closer to it. She realizes that it’s Molly. She’s in bed, still asleep. The dawn light has her gently bathed in an orange glow. Bette studies the picture intently, stunned by its beauty. She puts it down, only to see a stack of pictures sitting next to it. She picks them up and thumbs through them. She is more impressed with every photo that she sees. Just as she is about to put them down, Shane comes into the room.

“What are you doing with those? Put them down,” Shane orders. She drops the box and snatches the pictures from Bette’s hands. She turns around and places them in a drawer.
