Shane and Molly: A Love Story Chapters 1-6

“Fvck,” Tina whispers. “I just assumed you knew, Molly. I’m sorry, Shane.”

“Knew what? Shane, what should I know?”

Shane swallows hard, barely looks up from her food, and says, “Jenny’s in love with me.” She takes another quick bite of her sandwich.

    “And you never told me?”

“It doesn’t matter, Molly. I love you.”

    “Well, it matters to me.”

As Shane and Molly are arguing, Tasha leans over to the rest of the group and suggests that they go. As they are gathering up their stuff, trying to make a quick and quiet exit, Molly catches on to them.

“No, you guys stay. I’m leaving.” She gets up from the table and storms out.

Shane throws her sandwich onto her plate. “Fvck! Thanks a lot, Tina.” She gets up and runs after Molly.

“Molly! Wait!” she calls out as she sees her rounding the street corner, but Molly keeps walking. Shane runs after her and finally catches up to her. She grabs her hand and spins her around. “Why are you so upset? So Jenny’s in love with me. I don’t feel the same way about her. I’m in love with you. I didn’t tell you because it just doesn’t matter.”

“Yes it does,” Molly says flatly. Shane is still confused by Molly’s behavior and it is written all over her face. “Just forget it, Shane.” She starts to walk away again, but Shane jumps in front of her.

“Where are you going? I drove, remember?”

“I’m going to my mother’s. I just need to be alone right now.”

“Okay, okay. Can I at least drive you there?”

“No, Shane. Please. Just leave me alone for now,” Molly pleads.

“Okay, okay. Fine. I can do that.” She leans in to kiss her, but Molly turns her face. Shane pulls back, hurt and stunned, but stammers out, “I love you,” as Molly walks away. Shane watches her until she can no longer see her in the crowds. She brings her hand to her forehead, massages her temples, and yells, “Fvck!” She lingers for a moment longer, and then heads back to her Jeep.

Shane has spent all afternoon sitting on the couch just watching the door. Waiting for it to open, waiting for Molly to walk back in, waiting for Molly to come back home. She glances at her watch. “9:30,” she thinks to herself. “Where the fvck is she?” Just then, her cell phone rings. She hurriedly picks it up and she can’t hide the eagerness in her voice when she answers, “Hello?”
