    The Black Flag Ch. 22

    Chapter 22

“That’s Cain’s ship.” Carmen pointed over the small bow of their meagre boat to the large brigantine tied to one of the many docks situated on the Florida Keys coastline. It seemed bigger than Shane remembered but with the immense difference in size between Cain’s monster of a ship and their runt, it seemed natural that it would look even bigger than before.

It looked recently careened and the hull completely stripped of barnacles and Shane grinned to herself. “Looks like he’s already careened ‘er for us.” Shane gave a small laugh at the small bit of luck. The ship would be much faster now that it’d been careened and that would make it all the easier for them to escape once they’d freed Carmen’s friends and family and had stolen Cain’s ship.

Shane leaned back on her wooden bench and propped her feet up along the edge as Victor took them around the docks slowly. She cocked her head at the ship and squinted her eyes. The name of the ship had been painted on in a dark blue paint but the wear and tear on the ship had near stripped it from it’s hull leaving only small chips of paint behind. Obviously no one had bothered to repaint it after the ship had been careened and repaired.

“What’d that used to say?” Shane asked glancing to Carmen as Victor tied up the sail and went about pulling their small boat up next to an empty dock.

“Red Water.” Victor answered before Carmen could. Shane and Carmen’s eyebrows knitted together and they redirected their gazes to the large African man as he tied the ship off and hopped up onto the dock.

    “How-”

“Come on,” Victor cut Shane off before she could ask how he knew the name of the ship even though the paint had clearly been chipped away some time ago by wind and rain. Victor kept his face vacant of any emotions as he held out his gloved hand to his fellow pirates.

Shane gave him a strange look but decided to drop it and simply took his hand and let him haul her from the boat. Shane dug into her pockets as the dock worker came down the dock holding a leather-bound book in his chubby fingers.
