The Other Side of the Game Part 4
Candace: Besides, like I told you before, ***** will freeze over before I ever set one foot into that church again.
Mikela: Sighs and states, So I guess your coming with me to my nephews baptism next Sunday is out of the question, huh?
Candace shoots her an exasperated look and replies, slowly emphasizing each word, When ***** Freezes Over.
Mikela, disappointed but not surprised by Candaces stubbornness, conceded this battle as lost. Stabbing a piece of her salmon with her fork, she raises it to her mouth, and eats it. Candace is still a little heated and continues speaking.
Candace: I dont know why your family still goes to that church.
Mikela: You know why. My great grandfather was a founding father of the church. It has seen my family through every christening, baptism, wedding and funeral for five generations and counting. She pauses and reaches to place her hand over Candaces hand. Look baby, I know that some of the members at the church are not the most open people, but youve dealt with worse.
Candace: Only because I had to. Im not about to sacrifice a nice Sunday morning to be ridiculed about my sexuality.
Mikela: Yes, but you know my family is important to me.
Candace: Im not telling you not to go. By all means go. I know how important your family is to you, but they dont need me there so I rather not go.
Mikela: Curtis invited both of us, which means they want you there. But more importantly, I want you there. She senses that Candace may be wavering a little so she decides to try another approach. You could consider Marios baptism as a rehearsal for when Yolanda decides to get the baby blessed. From the way you describe it, her mothers church is worse than mine.
Candace smirks: Ok first off, you know full well Yolanda will never subject our daughter to anything involving her mothers church. Secondly, that old fashion church will never bless a child of an unwed *****. So that is a moot point.
Mikela: Wow, do I hear you say our daughter? I think this is the first time I can recall hearing you refer to the baby as your child. Is it finally sinking in?
