The Sound Track of Our Lives

“Yes, a challenge.” Charlotte laughs again but for the life of her Bette couldn’t figure out what was so funny, it was beginning to annoy her. With her annoyance also came her self-assuredness.  Bette reclaimed her personal space by meeting Charlotte‘s gaze full on and arched her eyebrow in question. She calmly took a sip of her espresso and waited for her odd companion to continue. Charlotte leans back into her chair and nods slightly, pleased with herself.

“I would like you to perform with me on a regular basis.”

“You want me to join your band? I thought Kit was joking.” Bette frowns and looks at Charlotte in a questioning way,” Why?”

“Well, first off I don’t want you to join that band. I am trying to form a new group that does mostly blues and jazz, maybe a few rock classics but mostly I want to get back to the basics.” Charlotte visually gets excited; music being very obviously this woman’s passion. “I would like you to join me because of what I saw last night.”

“What is it you saw, beside me making a fool of myself?”

Charlotte looks puzzled as she studies Bette,” You really don’t know, do you Bette?” She shakes her head in wonderment,” Since you obviously don’t know, I guess it is now my job to inform you. What I saw last night, Ms Bette Porter, was you. I saw you pour your heart and soul into a song. I saw you take a song and make it your own. I saw you transform the lives of those women as only a good performer can do. What I saw Bette, was passion and fire. I saw a blues musician; whether you knew it or not, that is what you are Bette. All I ask is that you let me bask in the glow for a little bit. It would be a great honor for me.”

Bette laughs, startling herself. “A blues musician? No, Kit is the musician; I am a director of an art museum. I do thank you for the very flattering offer. I didn’t do it because I wanted to be a performer, I am very happy where I am. You have made my day.”
