The Sound Track of Our Lives

“I highly doubt the woman I saw staring at her cigarette in an accusatory manner, is a happy one. Blues helps cure what ails you.”

Bette stiffens, “I don’t see how my happiness is any of your business.”

“Hey,” Charlotte holds up her hands,” I’m sorry you are right it isn’t any of my business. I have the bad habit of trying to help people through emotional turmoil. I’ll butt out. In was nice to meet you Bette. If you change you mind call me.” She places a card on the table and begins to stand up. She stops herself, half of her body raised out of the chair, “Let me at least ask this if I may, why did you sing last night Bette?”

Bette studies Charlotte trying to decide what to say, what to make of this woman. If she liked her or trusted her enough to tell her what motivated her.

Charlotte nods, “Then it is what motives us all to do things that are out of character, love.”

Bette stares at the woman next to her, deciding to trust her. She nods, “Yes, Love”

“I take it didn’t work quite as planned.”

                “Why do you say that?”

Charlotte sits back down, “Because if it had work like you wanted to you wouldn’t be here sitting by yourself in a state of melancholy. That is a very grand and public gesture; it is a shame it didn’t work. It would have worked for me but then I am a sucker for heartbroken women singing the blues.”

Bette closes her eyes, “I thought for sure she would remember.”

                “Remember?”

“Yes, we had been dating for a month. We were taking it slow because she had never dated a woman before and was unsure of herself. God, she was, no is, worth the wait

                ********

“So you and Miss Tina do the dirty yet?”

                “Alice!”

                “Whoa, that’s a no.”

“That is none of your concern.”

“So what is the hold up? It has been like 5 weeks. You aren’t losing it are you, Porter? Just the other day I had to defend your honor as a ***** goddess.”

    2. If Bette took a job singing in a band Tina would have a heart attack. Bette should try it on the weekend. and still work at the CAC. Maybe Tina would wake up thanks
