    Chapter 10 – Tuesday – Daniel’s Test and Marilyn’s Visit

Tina:  Thank you.  Bette will have the paperwork prepared and sent to you over the next couple of weeks.  We will need executed copies for the school and for us as well as yourself. It will remain in place until Angie revokes it. Since this is something that Angie is giving you, she is the ultimate decision maker on this.

Angie:  Grandma Marilyn, it will be in place as long as I am at Yale. I trust you and know that you will act in my best interest.  Thank you for doing this.

Marilyn:  Thank you for asking me.  I am truly honored.

Helena:  We have talked to Marilyn about the fact that you and Bette are going to sell this apartment and the fact that Marilyn wishes to move to a more modest size apartment. So, would you describe this apartment and then give us a possible tour.

Tina: Certainly…. This apartment is on the 6th and 7th floors of the Peabody Building. It’s located-on Madison Avenue and is close to Central Park and much of the prime shopping, the theatre district and many of the fine museums here in New York.  The building has 12 floors and approximately 24 apartments in the building. The building was built in the 1920s, has been remodeled at least 5 times. Bette and I remodeled this place in 2011. Our remodeling concentrated on updating the bathrooms and the kitchen and putting in addition electrical outlets in each of the rooms. Of course, we painted and redid the floors as well. The walls are thicker than wall you find in construction today. Our contractor estimated that load bearing walls are as much as 18 inches thick and non-load bearing wall are almost 12 inches thick. Therefore, they as almost soundproof. It is heated by radiator heat which is run by the building maintenance and it is airconditioned with central air which is a part of the building maintenance as well.  The monthly fee for security and building maintenance is $1,200 per month. That covers the electricity for the common areas, the air conditioning, the garbage fees, the building maintenance, the property taxes on the building, the security salaries and benefits. Now this apartment has 5 bedrooms all with on suite baths, a servant’s bathroom off the kitchen and laundry room, and a powder room downstairs.  Downstairs is the foyer, the living room, a large dining room, the kitchen with a utility room and a laundry room and a bath, a powder room, and the master suite which has its bath and a small study off the other side.  Upstairs there are four bedrooms each with an on suite bath and a lounge area which we use as a game room and lounge for the kids. There is a main elevator which most residents and visitors use which stops at only the even floors. Then there is the service elevator which stops at every floor. This is how the doorman get luggage and deliveries to all the floors. There is a service entrance door on both this floor and the upper floor. So, if you have trouble negotiating stairs, you could take the service elevator up to the floor above. We had to use that once when Angie and Bette both sprained their ankles. You just need your keys to reenter the apartment. There are two fire places – one in here and one in the master suite. There are four balconies – one here off the living room is the largest. There is a smaller one off the master suite, one upstairs off the lounge and one off the guest room. The ones off the lounge upstairs and the guest room and the master suite are more like just step out balconies. They are perfect places for people who smoke.

    1. Thank you… another chapter coming soon.. Couple of days…

As to the growth? I always imagined that as time passed, Bette and Tina would grow more in tuned with each other. They would grow to accept the other for who they were and their idiosyncrasies would become less bothersome for that is what defines them. As they become more knowledgeable of their mate, and more accepting of who they are, the more at peace they would become with themselves and the life they had chosen.
