    Children of the Night Ch6

“I am not your servant.”  Shane moaned.

“You will be whoever I want you to be. You want me to treat you like other bodyguards, so be one!”  Carmen snapped back at her.

“Just tell me how long you are going to be here for.”  Shane pleaded.

“You just have to wait until I am finished.  You sure talk a lot.”  With that said, Carmen turned her back on Shane and ignored her.

Carmen continued to stop at every aisle and check out a CD or two.  Shane swore that she was doing this on purpose – just to annoy her.   However, Shane had to admit that she was admiring her range of taste in music.  From rock and roll, to jazz, to classical, Shane didn’t know a lot of the artist names that were on the CDs.  She usually listened to anything that’s on the radio.  The last CD that she bought was Norah Jones…

The Norah Jones CD caught Shane’s eyes at that moment, she slowly reached out her hand and took it out of the rack.  She scanned the track list and found herself humming “Come away with me”.  It was the good times – before the accident happened, when she was happy with her.  They used to listen to this music after school, lying in each other’s arms, whispering promises to each other…

It was Carmen’s need for attention that bought her back to reality.  She was queuing at the pay station and waved for her to go over.  They paid and left.

As Shane walked past the front door, the security alarm went off.  A security guard came out and pointed at Shane’s shopping bag.

“It’s all been paid for, sir.”  Shane said holding up a receipt.

“But not the new iPod in your pocket.”  Carmen whispered and winked at Shane.

“What?” Shane reached into her pocket and felt the iPod.  This was not good. Shane could not believe how stupid she was not to notice Carmen’s little trick.

“You better run.”  Carmen started running down the street.  Shane evaluated the situation in a split second, and chased after Carmen.  No, ‘chased after Carmen’ was the wrong phase, ‘running for your life’ or ‘escaping from the law’ whichever fit the description better.
