Nothing Like You and I (Chapter 3): For You To Notice

Alice sat up and rubbed her eyes, red and swollen for what may have been several days of crying. Helena. She whispered in a voice raspy and worn out, a tone sad and broken enough to tear at Helenas heart. Perhaps it was because of her own broken heart when her marriage to Winnie ended, or perhaps it was the look of betrayal she remembered seeing on her fathers face when her mother walked out on them, returning to America and leaving them behind in England, but something about broken people allowed Helena to open her heart in ways she wouldnt normally dare with anyone, except her children. Something about seeing Alice sitting there, rumpled and unwashed hair, tear-stained face, and emotionally shattered that just tugged at Helenas every heartstring. She looked tenderly at Alice as she sat down beside her on the bed. I dont know if I can go on. I have nothing left. Ive lost her forever, havent I? She pled desperately, looking into Helenas eyes. Before the dark haired woman could answer her, Alice added, I dont even have a job anymore, unless you count the KCRW gig, that I may lose if I dont pull myself together.

Alice, youll get through this. Helena spoke with such conviction that she surprised even herself. She grabbed Alices hands and placed them close to her heart and continued with heartfelt emotion, Well get through this. And it was in that moment Helena swore to herself that she would see Alice through this. Maybe it was because she remembered how difficult it was to get out of bed every morning and slowly begin to live life again after Winnie walked out on her, or maybe it was because she wished she had been there to comfort her father, who was a broken man after Peggy walked out, dying of a broken heart just two months later, leaving the thirteen year old Helena to the mercy of a critical mother, who didnt want her and sent her packing to a boarding school in the English countryside until she was eighteen.

For the first time since she returned to discover Danas absence from her apartment and her life, Alice began to feel that everything would be all right. Tired from her tears and lack of food and water, Alice let her head collapse onto Helenas lap, which were folded Indian style as the brunette had earlier made herself comfortable. Helena brushed the reporters blonde hair gently and she whispered comforting words the way she would to her own children if they woke up with a nightmare. Alice didnt comprehend what Helena was saying, and she didnt need to, all she knew was that everything was going to be all right, tomorrow would be a new day and she will go on, even if her heart was broken. Alice rested that way for awhile, the room grew darker around them. Finally the reporter whispered, I dont deserve all your kindness Helena.

    1. It’s nice to see how you’ve written Helena and her actual genuine kindness in caring for Alice after the break-up with Dana. I was a fan of Dana and Lara when they were together, as well as a fan of Dana and Alice, so I’ve been wracking my brain for a while trying to figure out which pairing seems more appropriate for themselves as well as each other; but your using Helena (as hinted at by the spoilers) as someone to be there for Alice is not just believable, it’s wonderfully written. Great job, and please post more as soon as you can!

And now that I’ve rambled on, I’ll be ending this…. now. :)

    2. Good stuff! I’m glad that you showed a little more of Dana’s perspective, it is always nice to get that in fan fics, especially because sometimes I think she is one of the harder charcters to write. Love the way you are writing Helena as well, you have a great grasp on these characters as well as the more subtle intimate gestures. Keep up the good work!

    3. gets better and better with every post. i also like this helena, she’s much more human than in TLW and almost amiable. and i like your style, hopping between past and present.
