The Black Flag Ch. 23
The woman was ridged in her hold, not able to see her attacker. Shane kept her hand tight over Porter’s mouth as she heard the young blond talking to her father in the other room, reprimanding him for his rash actions.
Shane could hear Victor chuckle behind her, she was sure he knew this woman and it probably gave him great pleasure to see her caught off guard. From what Shane had gathered from watching her with Cain, she wasn’t one to be easily staggered.
Shane bit her lip a little bit as she glance back at Victor and he pointed slightly in the direction they would need to go. Right by the archway where Cain and his daughter were arguing. As if it wouldn’t be risky enough to run past it, now they had captured someone who might not want to come so willingly.
Shane sighed and shook her head, “Alright. Yer comin’ with us.” Shane whispered quietly to the woman and just as she was about to go and peer around the corner to make sure the two Kennard’s were still preoccupied, did the blond woman round the corner muttering to herself. Something to do with “Pig headed,” was all she’d gotten out before she noticed the four pirates and Porter held hostage in one of the pirate’s hands.
She was immediately startled and grabbed the nearest thing she could find, a fireplace poker, and held it up like a sword. She didn’t say a word and for that, the pirates were thankful. “Don’t-” Shane started before she was cut off.
“Don’t you hurt her, or so help me I’ll ram this through your heart.”
Shane eyes went wide, both hands occupied with keeping Porter still and quite. She was almost certain Cain would come around the corner at any second and call his guards on them if this woman didn’t keep her voice down.
“We’re only here for the slaves… No one has to get hurt.” Shane said calmly. Trying to keep her voice low.
“Victor? Wha-” The blond’s eyes drifted behind Shane to where the other pirates stood.
“We’re taking them away from here.” He stated quietly, it wasn’t an ultimatum. It was a simple fact.
“If you let us pass, we’ll let her go,” Shane said, giving her an option.
“On the contrary,” the woman lowered her poker, “I want nothing more than to see Porter free.”
Shane was slightly taken aback. She’d seen the way she defended Porter only moments ago, but she didn’t think for a second that she’d let someone take her. Shane was roused from her thoughts when Porter tugged at the hand over her mouth.
“I’ll not leave without you,” Porter said in a hushed voice, the sentence clearly meant for no one but Kennard’s ears. Shane could feel the tension, and there was absolutely no doubt in her mind that the two meant a lot to each other.
Shane chuckled slightly, feeling no threat from the two women, she released Porter from her grip, allowing her to finally turn and face her attackers. She eyed Victor slightly with a small amazed smile as if to say “You came back.” and Victor returned it with a nod of his head.
“Help us.” Shane smiled and crossed her arms confidently across her chest. “We’ll take you from here.” She smiled slightly to herself, had Victor not been with them for this, she knew how difficult it would be to convince the women to go along with it. But she could tell by the way they looked at him, that they trusted him.
Kennard peeked around the corner, making sure her father hadn’t heard any of the commotion and was relieved to see he’d gone out onto a patio, still within sight but far from earshot.
“Where are you planning to go?”
“Tulum.”
“My father’s ship may not be the quickest but with yours weighed with so many bodies, he’ll surely catch you.”
“Not if we take his ship…” Shane said and cocked a brow. She could swear she saw a look of apprehension pass the blond’s face before it turned to a smile.
“I’ll get the keys.”
