The Black Flag Ch. 23
She felt Carmen’s hand on her shoulder as she quietly rummaged around, looking for anything she would particularly enjoy over the other trinkets. She pulled up a thin gold necklace with a small, gold feather pendant on the end. She cocked a brow and turned to glance at Carmen. “This would look good on you.”
Carmen tried not to smile at the fact that Shane was blatantly taking another woman’s jewelry and slipping it on over her head. While the idea of it seemed tacky and cheap, the sentiment was there. She blushed just slightly as Shane’s fingers ghosted over it and admired the way it looked against her bronze skin. “See, I was right.” She let it out in a breathy whisper meant just for Carmen.
“We’re not here to loot, Shane.” Carmen admonished just slightly making Shane chuckle slightly.
“Right.” She turned back to the jewelry box, took one big handful, stuffing the contents into her pocket before turning and leaving the room.
The four pirates ventured out of the bedroom and down the wide hall. There were no lanterns on and as they passed each door they peered inside, making sure the coast was clear before continuing on. They came down a large staircase, down to the ground level where they could hear voices. They paused at the end of the staircase. It ended in a living room that made the deck of The Robin look small in comparison.
The voices they could hear seemed to be coming from an adjoining room, just around the corner from their position. Shane crouched down and poked her head around the corner to get an idea of what they might be up against, her hand resting on her pistol in the event that she would need it.
A monster of a man stood before a fair skinned African woman, whom Shane assumed to be one of the house servants. His eyes seemed nearly glazed over in rage. Shane could tell this man was Cain. His expensive clothes were telling. Shane cocked a brow and smiled at a scar on the man’s bare forearm where it looked as though someone had bit him. For a split second she thought maybe it had been the head strong girl in front of him but the way she held herself told Shane she would never stoop to something quite as barbaric. The Latina that had a tight grip on Shane’s arm however… Shane chuckled slightly, Carmen had left somewhat similar marks on her own body, usually on her neck though.
