The Black Flag Ch. 23
They scaled the side of the mansion, silently and carefully. For all they knew there could be someone awake on the other side of that window and all they would need to do was make a peep and their cover would be blown.
Shane made it to the top first, peering in through the small, open window for any signs of life. The room was void of any other presence and Shane let out a sigh of relief she didn’t even realize she had been holding.
She climbed through the window, making sure her footsteps fell quietly against the hard wood flooring. The room had a very feminine touch to it. Flowers in vases on the large dark wooden dresser and small, but most certainly expensive, paintings decorated the walls.
Shane licked her lips when she spotted a large jewelry box situated on top of the dresser, nearly hidden between two vases. She bit her lip and grinned, the temptation drawing her to it like a moth to a flame. She traced a finger over the gold filigree on top that spelled out the name “Tina”, letting the anticipation grow just slightly before being interrupted.
“Little help, Shane.”
Shane glanced over her shoulder to where Victor had been trying to squeeze through the small window but his broad shoulders holding him back. Shane tried to stifle a laugh at the awkward position he’d managed to get himself into while trying to pass through into the bedroom.
She took his free hand and pulled him in with one hard tug and cringed when he fell to the floor with a rather large thud. She paused for a moment, waiting to see if anyone would come to investigate the sound, but no one came. She let out an exasperated sigh and thanked their lucky stars before taking Carmen’s hand and helping her in through the window. This time much slower and with a gentle ease.
She immediately turned back to the jewelry box, leaving behind the last pirate who’d held out his hand, waiting for her to help pull him in.
Diego huffed and shook his head, resorting to his own strength to pull himself in, “Thanks, Shane.”
“You’re so very welcome,” she playfully stated, ignoring the sarcasm in his voice as she opened the box and let her eyes run over the jewels and gold that lay inside.
