    The Black Flag Ch. 23

“You should consider yourself damn lucky to stay under this roof! If it were up to me, you’d be down in the slave quarters with the other degenerates,” Cain spoke with venom in his voice at the woman who stood seemingly unaffected by his words.

Shane could feel the tension in Victor behind her, even though he stood behind her by a few feet, merely listening, so the lanky pirate knew it was to do with his choice of words and not because he knew who Cain was talking to.

“No more degenerates than you,” the woman spoke with much conviction in her voice, never flinching, not even as Cain’s hand came down across her beautiful face. Shane flinched just slightly at the action and averted her gaze for a split second.

“Father!” Shane jumped slightly at the new voice. She’d not noticed the other woman in the room as she’d been to far around the corner. She came quickly to the taller woman’s side and placed a hand on her back. “Don’t you touch her.”

Shane was shocked to say the least at what she was witnessing. Two women, one of African decent, both standing up to the wealthy man. It wasn’t completely unheard of, but usually such woman were criticized and sometimes even brought before judges to be shown the “Error if their ways.”

“You’d better teach Porter her place before I do,” Cain threatened, holding one finger up to his daughter before dropping it. “If I catch you wondering about my house, after hours again, I’ll have you flogged.” He glared down on Porter and walked away from the two and over to a window that overlooked his vast yard in an attempt to cool down.

Porter shook her head and walked away leaving Cain’s daughter standing there, glaring at her father. Shane made a face and quickly ducked back around the corner as Porter approached. She made a motion with her hand that told the other pirates to back up against the wall and stay quiet.

The very moment Porter walked through the arch and into the living room Shane grabbed her wrist, pulled her back to her and forced a hand over her mouth to keep her quite. The woman jerked at the suddenness and made a small muffled noise as Shane whispered into her ear from behind. “I don’t want to hurt you… I need you to stay quiet for me, alright?”
