The Black Flag Ch. 23
“Victor? Where are you going?” Shane asked, catching up to the man and falling into step beside him.
“To Cain’s manor,” Victor stated with a cool ease, not once glancing down to Shane who he knew would be sporting a rather curious look on her jaunty features.
“Uh…. right…” Shane said, and lifted one easy eyebrow. She could tell by his simple statement that there was something he obviously hadn’t told them but she wasn’t sure she should ask and so, out of respect kept her mouth shut and followed in suit beside him.
“How the Hell do you know where Cain’s manor is?” Carmen however, had a very contrasting form of tact compared to Shane’s.
Victor made a noise from deep within his throat, something akin to a sigh and gave the Latina a halfhearted and artificial smile before begrudgingly taking off the thick leather glove that he wore on his right hand.
Shane had always thought the man had worn the long, thick glove for the sole purpose of doing hotshots, to protect his hand from the glowing red iron ball as he loaded it into the cannons. That misconception soon vanished as he peeled it off revealing a small, but very distinct, brand that had been seared into his flesh. The letters “CK” were thick and clear on his dark skin.
“C.K?” Shane already knew what it meant but still had the curiosity to ask.
“Cain Kennard.” Victor stated, there was a hint of resentment in his voice that did not go unnoticed by his thee companions.
“You- you were his property?” Carmen asked tracing a finger over the scar before he pulled it away and once again slipped the glove up over his arm, once again hiding it from view.
“Once… Three years ago. I escaped… or in more accurate terms, I abandoned my friends and family to a life of abject misery.” Victor looked down and away from the group, clearly upset with himself but before long composed himself once again. “It’s not that I never wanted to go back, or entertained the idea… but it always seemed outlandish and foolish.” He cast his gaze to Shane and gave a small but sincere smile. “I suppose I have you to thank for this. I mean, if a skinny little runt like you can stand up and fight for people you don’t even know, than I certainly can too.”
