The Dying of the Light Part 24

Jumping out of her seat, she points and accusing finger at each of them, “How dare you all not share this with me?  You knew Jenny was gone, but you let me think everything was getting better in Lesboland.”

Spontaneously Tina, Helena, Shane and Kit burst out in fits of giggles.

“What are you on?”  Shane asked, incredulous.

“Don’t laugh at me!  How can anything be getting better when I am cut out of the loop.  That is not only unfair, it’s cruel.”  Alice punctuated by smacking her hand on the on the table.

“You are either over or under drugged Al.”  Shane managed to choke out while laughing.

Defeated Alice sunk back into her chair.  “How didn’t I notice her missing?  She crazies things up.  Things have still been crazy.”  It perturbed her not noticing, when had she lost her observational skills.  Once upon a time nothing happened in Lesboland without Alice Pieszecki’s knowledge.

“Alice no one noticed, not till now.”  Kit tried to pacify Alice.

“Hardly.  I noticed she was gone over a month ago.  I just thanked the all mighty for our bloody good luck.”  Helena corrected, amused at the overreaction.

“You all know where she has gone.  Why didn’t anyone tell me?”  It wasn’t funny.  Not at all, and Alice could grasp the reason for the laughter.  She was being serious.  This was serious.

Swallowing her laughter Shane leant forward.  “Jenny has moved to New York.  Better writing or something.”  Standing up Shane picked up her jacket, “I really have to go girls.”  She was running very late.

Shrugging on her jacket, “My place, 6pm – bring food.”  She said before running out of the building.

    **********

Tick, tock, tick, tock.  Bette counted in her head as second pasted over.  Digital watches failed to carry with it the dire warning of the passage of time.  It was one minute, then the next turned over.  There was no fanfare.  No joy.

    Bette wanted to fanfare.

Wanted the reminder that time is limited.

    She just wanted to noise.

It was so quiet in the room.  In the hall.  the building.

It wasn’t quiet in her head.  Whispers of death licked at her ears, begging, denying… fearing.  It was all so much… so much static.  Even in the silence she was never alone.

    1. Hi there, dear sweet Deean! Our nephew JC informed us you were in the Spotlight this week. We will make sure to join you over there, tonight. As for the story, we knew Shane was not going to curl and go hiding, leaving Bette alone. She knows her friend needs more that soft words. The assurance that she will not leave, no matter what, is exactly what Bette needs. Plus, know that she deserves to be taken care of by one of her loyal friends. Yep. Excellent choice. We are sure that Shane will make Bette to exteriorize those ugly demons that are playing games with her self esteem. Great update, dearest friend. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)

    2. This chap made me cry too. It’s like I really feel Bette’s pain too. I’m glad Shane has a thick skin and didn’t fall for Bette’s plan to get rid of her. I only hope Shane can get Bette to see she’s loved so much by the rest of the family and they need her back with them. PPS!!
