Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

“Really, you thought that?”  Dylan said.

“When you’re away from me, I still do, darling.”

    "Then what?"

“I offered you more of the sweet wine, not caring that my father would be furious if all of his drink was gone when he returned.  You held up your mug and I poured the wine.  I remember, I took your hand to steady the mug and I noticed that you had small pricks and scratches on your hands from picking some of the more spiny-stemmed flowers.  I opened your palm and you were covered with tiny pink and red scratches.

‘I have something for that.  My brother hurts himself when he cuts trees.  I have a salve for that.’  I stood up and walked to the shelf that contained spices and medicinals and found the small clay pot I needed.  I came back to the hearth and you were seated on a wool blanket–a blanket my father had traded for four long lengths of bamboo about two years earlier.  The blanket was large and soft and I sat down next to you, took your hand in mine and began to rub the salve into your palm.  ‘Tell me if it hurts.’

    ‘’It hurts,’ you said.

    ‘I’m hurting your hand?’

‘No, you’re not hurting my hand, but I do feel this ache inside of me.’

I looked up at you, into your face, searched your eyes for understanding.  You took the pot of salve from me, placed it on the mud-packed floor and held my hands in yours.  ‘My hands don’t hurt so much, but my heart beats hard and I feel nervous about sitting here in front of you.  There is this ache.  And when you went to get that salve, I watched you walk over there and counted how long it took, so I’d know how long it would take for you to return once you turned around.  And this evening as we ate our meal, I thought, tonight I will dream that the world is filled with more flowers than we could ever use to make dyes, but that we have to gather all of them together.  This way, you will have to be by my side always.  And then I thought, this will be my dream tonight and when I awaken tomorrow, it will be true.’

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
