Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    ‘Let’s hurry back.’

You didn’t even ask. It seemed like the right thing to do with you.  So we left, hurried back, stopping on the way to retrieve your basket filled with rope and yarn.  The sun was at two o’clock in the sky and we were both hungry.  I forgot about my worry about not having enough food for father, my brother, and the visitor.  I wanted to feed you a proper afternoon meal.

We shared chunks of meat cooked in coconut and ate fruit and bread.  We talked like we’d known each other forever.  After lunch, we were working side-by-side as if it were an everyday occurrence.  I brought water to a boil in every pot and vessel we had, while you mixed ingredients with your mortar and pestle.  You added your colors and we watched them simmer and thicken in the water.  Later, you added some of the yarn and started on your next batch.  Somehow, we worked in total sync, sometimes talking quite a bit, other times, not speaking at all.  We worked through the rest of the day and into the night.  You slept on the floor beside me.”

“Did we kiss?” Dylan asked.  She was hanging on Helena’s every word.  Helena’s description was alive to her.  She could smell the air of the island and feel the warmth of the fire coming from the hearth.

“No, but you held my hand as we slept.”

“The next day, we ate bread soaked in milk, then returned to the forest, to the field of flowers, where we picked flowers and separated them into small baskets.  We didn’t even stop for lunch.  I watched you carefully scrape the most verdant moss from the base of trees and the ground.  Your mind was only on your work and I was fascinated by you.  I remember I couldn’t take my eyes off of you and I felt funny inside–a feeling that was odd, yet decidedly wonderful.  As I bent over, picking delicate pink petals from a flower, I heard the sound of birds tweeting and whistling.  They were loud and merry and I looked up only to see that it was your doing.  I whistled with you and it was a beautiful noise and I was euphoric. ”

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
