Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

I felt you smile at me, though I wouldn’t look at you.

‘Isn’t this pretty?’  You held up one of the largest sunflowers I had ever seen.  There were few sunflowers that grew in that dense part of the forest, though I knew where they were plentiful elsewhere.    ‘It’s more orange than the ones I normally see.  If I find more, it will be make a beautiful dye.  It might look like the sunset after rain.’

    ‘That is pretty.’

‘Do you know where I could find more?  Could you help me?  My job sure would be easier with a partner.  If you’re not too busy climbing trees?’

‘I was getting ingredients to make bread.  I wasn’t playing,’ I said defensively.

    ‘A thousand pardons.’  You laughed.

‘I can help you.  I know where there are dozens that grow wild.  Follow me.’  I was commanding.”

“Imagine that,” Dylan said.  She was looking up at Helena and listening to this story like a child might hearing a storyteller at school.

Helena slapped Dylan’s stomach.  “I began marching off in the opposite direction from my home.  I knew the exact spot for these sunflowers.  When we reached the area that the sun graced with a full beam of light for hours and hours of the day, you discovered sunflowers and many other colorful blooms.

‘My God.  This is a treasure.  Purples, blues, browns, whites, greens, yellows, oranges.  Here’s a color I’ve never seen before. And these sunflowers, like the other one–can’t you see the sun going down when you look at these?’  You didn’t give me a chance to answer.  ‘I have to share these colors with everyone.  No one will believe me.  Is it all right to pick these flowers?’

‘They don’t belong to me.  I don’t care.’  You were giddy and I didn’t know what to make of it.  I felt what you felt.  I was excited for you.

‘I’ll need to come out tomorrow, too.  I’ll never be able to gather all that I need and I’m going to have to start grinding and mixing immediately.  Do you have a hearth where you live?’

    ‘Yes.’

    ‘And access to water?’

    ‘We do.’

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
