Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

“Helena, you’re not making sense.  You and your psychics.”

Helena patted Dylan’s bare, flat, belly to quiet her.  “Not a psychic, this time, but someone who hypnotized me and took me back."  She cleared her throat.  "As I was saying, I didn’t live alone.  I lived with my father and brother who worked hard and I tended to them.   They cut down bamboo, made rope, traveled across the island building well-built huts that could withstand the elements for the people.  Sometimes, they’d be gone for days, sometimes weeks at a time.  My mother had moved away when I was four.  She was young and beautiful and my father traded her for tools and supplies.  Now, I was about nineteen, perhaps younger.  The last time my father was home, he and my brother continued a conversation that had started, I suppose sometime during their journey home.”

    “When was this?”

“I’m not sure.  I dare say it wasn’t in the twentieth century.”

    “This is our story?”

“It is.  Listen.”  Helena bent and kissed Dylan’s forehead.  “They. . . my father and brother continued this conversation.  My father said that the two of them would have to learn to get along without me.  They spoke as if I wasn’t there; as if I wasn’t placing fresh baked flat bread and fruit and vegetables on their platters.  I listened as they talked.  My brother said that he liked having me around and I liked to hear stories about the world, at least the world that made up our island.  But my father was adamant.  On their next trip home, he’d bring a man to meet me.  If the man was agreeable, I would be traded for a machete and other items for their business.  My brother said the man was too old for me and had a reputation as a not-so-nice fellow.

I started to protest, but my brother shook his head, telling me to stay out of it.  Later that night, he promised he wouldn’t let our mother’s fate be mine as well.”

    “I’m confused.”

“Wait, hear me out.”  Helena brushed Dylan’s hair away from her forehead, her fingers sweeping back a strand of hair at a time, as she spoke.  “They left two days later with a cart filled with bamboo of varying lengths.  My father told me they’d return in seven sunsets and to make our home pleasant and inviting.  I remember I had dried some of the spongy center of some palm trees and was grinding the hardened substance into flour.  I looked up at him and nodded.  I didn’t dare speak for fear of sobbing.  I knew nothing about the world.  I had been sheltered.  I knew nothing of married life.  My contact with the outside world was my father and brother and a vague recollection of my mother.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
