Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    Dylan smiled up at Helena.

“We repeated our activities of the afternoon before—boiling water, mixing materials, creating colors.  This time we talked throughout.  I told you about my family and how I was basically on my own, but my father had plans for me that I didn’t like.  You told me that you’d been on your own most of your life and that the only thing you were good at was creating something pretty from other pretty and not so pretty things.  You told me you had been orphaned and had been making dyes since you were five years old.  I thought you might be about nineteen, too.  You didn’t know your age.

That night’s dyeing went fast.  We had a good rhythm and the now colorful yarns that were strewn around the one room drying on mats and from ropes made my little hut look like a magical rainbow come to life.

That night you asked me about the man my father was bringing home and if I would grow to love him.  I explained to you that I had never heard the word ‘love.’  I asked you to explain it.”

“Did I?” Dylan asked wolfishly.  She liked this make-believe story Helena had created.

“We sat in front of the hearth and shared some hibiscus wine that my father had made and you told me about feelings.  You said that you had heard your heart beats differently and you might be nervous around this person.  And you said that when you’re with them, you want to be with them forever and when you’re away from them, you count the seconds until they return.

I was afraid to tell you that I had noticed my heart’s rhythm danced when you were near and that had never happened before.  And that I wanted nothing more than to please you.  Oh, I didn’t dare tell you that when we were picking flowers I prayed that the sun would never set so we could pick flowers together always or that when you had left the hut to fetch water, I had counted in my head how many paces from the hut to the spring and back.  I knew how long it would take and it felt like an eternity.”

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
