Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    "I-I guess."

"I was just about to go out for a ride.  I’m training for a 10K ride for Juvenile Diabetes."

Dejected.  "Oh, I’m sorry.  I-I never mind.  I can handle th. . ."

"Stephanie, I was going to suggest I ride up to your place.  They coordinate those new to recovery with sponsors in the same area.  I’m not that far.  I can be up to you in about fifteen minutes.  I’m in Marina del Rey."

"Uh. . . well, he’s asleep.  I-I guess I could, you know, get rid of him.  I’d like it if you could come.  I. . .shit, shit."

    "What?"

"I need to talk to someone who gets it."

"I’ll be right there.  Don’t worry, Stephanie.  This afternoon isn’t the end of the world.  We’re always moving forward, not looking back."

    "Okay," she said softly.  "Okay."

    3:30pm

Shane shook hands with Ms. Kerr, the Principal at Shay’s elementary school.  "It was nice to meet you."  She turned to the secretary, an unassuming, dishwater blonde, fair-skinned and freckled woman dressed in an eggshell two piece suit with large dark brown buttons.  The buttons were about the only color visible on this woman.  "Mrs. Jenkins, thank you for your help."

"I think this is the first time all year I’ve pulled out my Notary Public seal.  Glad I can help.  Now, since you’re taking Shay, I hope you can find your way to the PTA meetings and such and participate in his life down there in Los Angeles.  Mr. McCutcheon, this is the first time we’ve met and that’s shameful."

Ms. Kerr, a tall, rigid woman standing at well over six feet looked down at her secretary and gave her a look of warning.

"It’s true Principal Kerr.  We’ve got to have parents. . ."  She looked at Shane.  "And guardians who give a good gosh darn.  Shay’s been at this school for four years and this is the first time I’ve seen you."

    "I work."

"I understand you got fired months ago.  You could have been volunteering at the school."

"And when would I look for work?" Gabe said to her.  He wanted to get the hell out of the elementary school and get a cigarette in his mouth.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
