Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"Well, it’s neither here nor there at this point.  Shane, good luck.  Shay’s a great boy and you must be an excellent sister to take on this responsibility while his parents get the help they need," Kerr said.

"Whoa, hold up there, lady.  I don’t need help.  I don’t have a problem.  I told you it’s my wife.  My wife has a drug problem and is going into treatment."

"Not having a job is something of a problem," Jenkins said.

"What is your problem?  Not getting any at home."

"Dad."  Shane turned to the secretary.  "He’s stressed."

"So we’ll get all of the papers in order and when you’re ready to enroll Shay in school down in California, please have the school notify us using the contact information I gave you.  We can fax his records to them immediately."

    "Thank you.  Thank you again."

Internally, so no one could hear or see or feel her relief, she breathed deeply.  It was over.  She was actually going to be taking Shay out of this fucked up environment.  She felt proud of herself; felt accomplished and like the world was on her side.

"So, Geraldine, we’ll have to get his homeroom teacher to make a nice party for Shay on Friday.  We’ll be sad to see him go."

Jenkins nodded.  "I’ll leave a note for his teacher in his mailbox."

Shane smiled and turned to walk down the hall, her backpack filled with information, and a notarized letter from her father releasing his parental rights and giving her full guardianship temporarily.  It might not be the perfectly legal way of getting it done, but it would be good for now and for a few months.  She’d wait and see what happened.  If Carla could turn it around, then Shay should be back with his mother.  If not, her half-brother and Carmen would begin to create a new kind of family.  Six months ago, she never would have anticipated this change of lifestyle; while the thought of it sent a chill up her spine, it nonetheless warmed her heart.

    4:45pm

Bette pulled their brand new, silver Lexus Hybrid into a parking space directly in front of the Planet.  Once she was in, she smiled at Tina who immediately stepped out of the car.  The women were dropping Angelica off with Kit and then going to the cryobank and from there, a nice dinner for two, and then home.  This evening and night belonged to them.  Both were dressed in evening attire with plans to go to an elegant restaurant for dinner, so they were a tad overdressed for four in the afternoon and definitely overdressed for a visit to the clinic to look at profiles of possible donors, but it didn’t matter.  They were both enjoying the eye candy the other presented.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
