Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    “You’re an adult.”

They both got out of the car and Tina walked around to join Bette at the back of the vehicle.  They walked hand-in-hand toward the building, looking out of place in their dressy outfits.  Together, they looked like a stunningly beautiful couple.  Tina in her Nicole Miller and Bette dressed in a Tracy Reese beaded bow dress looked like a powerful Hollywood couple.  Men and women in their cars, turned to watch them move down the street, no doubt wondering why the paparazzi wasn’t close by.  They looked like movie stars.  The silvery beads on Bette’s dress created a shiny trompe l’oeil butterfly design on top of the nearly sheer yoke turning a little black dress into something best described as fierce.  Bette wore black platform, slingbacks with a peep-toe and about four inches in heel that made her a commanding presence, towering over Tina by about six inches.

“When she came to live with Daddy and Mom and me, she was like fifteen or sixteen.  She was-was old enough to know that it wasn’t my fault, but guess what. . .?”  Bette nodded her head mostly to herself.  “She told me the other day that she hated me.  What the fuck is that?”  Bette dropped her hand from Tina’s.   "You know, what the fuck?"

Tina touched Bette’s shoulder and let her hand sweep down her arm until she was holding Bette’s hand in hers again.  “When she was a teenager, Bette.  Not now.  Not since I’ve been in your life.  She’s always shown nothing but love and affection for you.”

“. . .That when she looks at me, she sees my mother and hates me,” Bette continued.

“Now?”  Tina found this hard to believe.

    “No, then.”

“What has Kit done to you in the past twenty, twenty-five, even thirty years that would make you think that she hates you?”

    “She told me . . .”

“About how she felt at fifteen.  Bette, the woman is in her fifties now.  Jesus, stop tightening the noose.  Kit loves you, adores you, and she looks up to you.  You know she does.  You guys go to each other for advice all the time.  When we were separated, who was your confidante?  Alice?”

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
