Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

Dylan came to the bed, sat down on the edge, beside Helena.  She chuckled, "It’s not a ring, though if I were being perfectly honest, the idea of being married to you runs through my mind every now and then."  She laughed.  "Twenty times a day," she confessed.  "You know with Prime Minister Zapatero trying to pass gay marriage, I just . . ."

    "Truly?"

Dylan was bashful.  "I shouldn’t have said anything."

Helena sat up, the sheet tucked under her armpits.  "No, no, I’m overjoyed you spoke.  I-I feel the same, love.  I’ve been terrified of speaking my mind to you.  I thought perhaps I could give you a wee push in that direction at the wedding in a few days.  I want to be married to you.  I have wanted to give and have given so many material things in my life.  I’ve probably given away more than most people possess in a lifetime, but I’ve never fully given my heart.  Not until you and I want you to know that the gift is non-refundable and it is forever and I would want to seal that contract legally if we could, if you wanted. "

Dylan bent, kissed her.  "Yesterday, when I went down to the beach to turn over our space and give back the boat rental, I took a short walk.  I was looking down and saw this."  Dylan brought her hand around from her side and held the abalone shell.  "I saw this beautiful iridescent and shiny shell and I was drawn to it.  It’s bigger than the usual ones I’ve seen and much more colorful, and here. . ."  She gave it to Helena.  "Do you feel the energy coming from it?  I mean, I feel something."

Helena held it in her hands, turning it over, feeling the ridges on the outside and the remarkable smoothness inside.  "I do.  There is this energy, yeah."

"It reminds me of you."  Dylan didn’t explain further.  She didn’t need to.  The symbolism of the harder outside that seemed no-nonsense and impenetrable versus the slick interior that shone bright in light, filled with a mix of color and nuance, smooth to the touch.

Helena grinned and had a touch of déjà vu.  She didn’t know what caused it, but the feeling of having done this before caught in her heart.  Was it the faint scent of the Mediterranean that lingered on the shell, the vanilla candle that burned in the room, the feel of the shell in her hand, or was it something from that place that stretched back in time?

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
