    Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    She reached up and kissed her.  Helena hoped that things would never change between them.  She couldn’t be happier.  "So, about our friends. Which wine were you thinking of?

    * * * * *

    5:00pm

    Shay and a group of boys and girls were playing kickball as part of their afterschool program  while one teacher idly supervised them as he read a paperback novel.  The kids were using the edge of the black, rubber, tiled, padding under the jungle gym as homeplate, the end of the school fence as first base, second base was the tetherball pole, and third was the bottom of the stairs that led to the gymnasium.  The distance between the bases was off and there wasn’t a true square to the layout, but the children didn’t seem to mind.

    "Pierre, you’re up," the little girl who was rolling the big, red rubber ball from the pitcher’s mound to homeplate said.   A boy smaller than most of the other players ran to homeplate.  "All right.  I’m ready."

    Two older kids on the sideline said, "Hey kicker, hey kicker, hey kicker, hey," unnerving the insecure child who swung his leg back and missed the ball twice.  The third time, he kicked hard and it rolled back to the pitcher who threw it to the edge of the fence.

    "Get it, Shay.  Hurry.  Get it.  Get him out."  Shay dashed for the ball that didn’t quite make it to the base, grabbed it and ran back to first with it, tagging out the boy who was still closer to home than first base.  "Out.  Out.  You’re out," Shay shouted and jumped up and down.  The boy walked off the field and returned to the bottom rung of the slide’s ladder where he sat and watched.

    Gabriel and Shane McCutcheon had walked out of the building and around the corner and saw Shay playing in the game.  They took a seat on a bench far beyond third base and watched.  Shane didn’t know what Gabe had in his mind, but she was thinking that she’d have to get him involved with sports in Los Angeles.  He’d need activities to keep his mind occupied.  She knew what it was like to have nothing to do–trouble had a way of reaching out its long arm to a kid in LA.  Opportunities abounded for kids to try and do drugs, get involved with gangs, and Shay’s innocent face was just what an organization like NAMBLA sought out.  She had her own experiences with adult men looking for teenage boys and younger to corrupt.  She’d been there and would guard Shay from that exposure.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
