    Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    "Why’d you come up?  Did something happen to mom?"

    "Nah.  Guess who’s here?  Your big sister.  Shane’s here."

    "Shane?  Where?"

    "Down there sitting on the bench."

    Shay looked down the playground and saw her.  He screamed; his voice high and shrill.  "Shane!  Shane," and then he took off running toward her.  Shane was up, waiting for him, bending to hug him and pull him to her.

    "You came.  You came.  Thank you."  Tears poured down Shay’s face.  He was embarrassed to be crying in front of his friends, but he couldn’t help it.  Shane hadn’t let him down.

    * * * * *

    Stephanie and Fran were sitting on a patch of grass between the sand and the boardwalk.  Fran’s bike was propped against a nearby tree and she was eyeing it while they addressed Stephanie’s issues.  They’d been talking about half an hour and Fran had gotten Stephanie to calm down and to stop beating herself up about what had happened.  Stephanie was older than Fran by at least a decade, but Fran was the sponsor.  Stephanie learned that Fran had been abused by her older brother and nothing had been done about it for the seven years it had gone on, though her parents suspected and had even caught their son in action..  At fourteen, she quietly enrolled in a self-defense class and learned how to protect herself.  The next time he had approached her to rape her was his last.  She had left him in her bedroom screaming out in agony, holding his hands over his injured testicles while blood poured from his nose onto the floor.  Later that night he was kicked out of the house and her parents got her into treatment.  Now she was an activist for survivors.

    "You’re gonna be all right," Fran said.

    "I just don’t want everyone to think I’m some fucked up loser.  I don’t want him to know that I’m this messed up."

    "You’re not messed up.  You’re human; you wanted human contact.  All you have to do is think about why you’re doing certain things.  It’s not wrong to make love or have sex.  It’s not wrong to want to be close, but you have to ask yourself am I doing this to please myself or him; is this my way of escaping discussion or validating the relationship or hiding my fears or a host of other reasons.  You have to know the whys of moving forward to that place with him or anyone else," she reiterated.  Fran had said the same thing in various ways for the past thirty minutes, but that really was the crux of what needed to be said.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
