Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

She looked at her father again.  A cigarette dangled from his mouth and he puffed and let the ashes grow on the cigarette and fall onto his shirt.  She noticed the way they sat.  Both of them had their legs stretched out in front of them, crossed at the ankle, and their arms locked behind them, stretched back on the bench.  Shane wondered if Gabe realized this would be the last time he’d see Shay play ball for a while.  Knowing him, it could very well be the last time ever.  She watched as he sat up, took the cigarette from his mouth, flicked it to the ground and mashed it out.  Shane hadn’t lit up.  She thought it was time she weaned herself from those, too.  It wasn’t good for a kid to be around a lot of smoke.  Carmen already insisted that she smoke on the deck or on the porch.  Maybe she’d smoke only at clubs when they went out until she could finally give them up for good.

Gabe stood and yawned, moved forward until he was right behind third base.  "Shay!  Shay!  Let’s go."

Shay looked up.  "Hi, Dad," he called.  "It’s almost over.  One more out."

"Yeah, well, they can make it without you.  We’ve got a lot to do."

Shay looked bewildered and Shane shook her head in annoyance.  She thought, what did he have to do other than get another beer out of the fridge? I guess beers don’t just drink themselves.  He had work to do.  However, couldn’t the beer wait five fucking minutes until they get an out?

"Nope, let’s move.  C’mon."  Gabe was between third and home now and Shay worried that he would just cross over in the middle of the game.

"Okay," he looked at the kids hanging from the jungle gym.  "Can somebody take my place?"

One kid was alert enough and not fantasizing about the video games he had at home.  He ran out to meet Shay.  "I’ll play for you.  See ya."  He slapped Shay on the back as he ran to their version of first base.

Gabe was standing directly behind homeplate preventing the game from continuing.  Shay ran to him and moved him away from the play.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
