Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

They were seated in the kitchen talking.  In the background, the shower was running in the bathroom.  The shower had also been on since Shane arrived.

    “She takes long showers?”

Gabe was leaning against the kitchen counter.  The house smelled of stale cigarettes and from the bathroom, the smell that reminded Shane of melting plastic.  Shane knew that smell, too.  She’d crashed in enough apartments in LA of drug users to know it.  Sometimes the smell was like burning plastic, sometimes like an oven turned on to the self-cleaning mode, and sometimes sickly sweet.  It was the smell of Meth being smoked.  Gabe didn’t seem to notice or care.  “Yeah.  Lucky for me the water bill’s in her name.  Not my problem.”

“But she is your problem.  You’re married.”

“She’s a Meth-head.  I’m not stupid.  I gotta do somethin’ about that.  She needs some kinda treatment or somethin’.  I can’t hold this together.  I can’t break the door down and bring her out.”

“I know, Dad.”  She hated calling him Dad.  After the fiasco at the airport with Shay, when Shay had managed to get on a train to LA, she’d had it with Gabe.  When he had arrived at the airport to meet them, he acted put out with little to no concern for his child and no interest in Shane’s time.  He was a jerk and anyone could see it.  “That’s why I wanna help out if I can.”

“I’m not givin’ you my boy.  That’s crazy.”  He took a swallow of the beer.

“You’re dealing with Carla.  You don’t have time for Shay.  Do you even know if he’s at school?  What he was wearing when he left the house?”

Gabe didn’t know either and Shane could see it in his eyes, but he blinked and said, “Hey, don’t act like I don’t care and like you give a shit.  As I heard you didn’t even finish high school.”

She thought, no thanks to you, but said, “I got my GED and I got my cosmetology license.  I’m a Master Hair Stylist.”  Shane took pride in her achievements.  She didn’t add that she was a hairstylist to the Stars and was bringing home no less than four thousand dollars a month.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
