Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

“Well, goody for you.  You cut hair.  Smitty, the seventy-five year old at the shop down the street cuts hair, too.  I can’t understand a word the man says.  He’s as ignorant as the day is long, but he’s got a license.”

Shane blinked back the hurt she felt.  Why did he have to be this way?  She didn’t want Shay dealing with this kind of emotional abuse.  She took a breath.  “Dad, I was just saying you need someone to help you out.  You’ve got your hands full with Carla.”

    “Damn straight, I do.”

“I borrowed money to fly up here,” she lied.  “I’m not rich, but I’m pretty stable.  I’ve got a steady paycheck coming in.  I could take Shay off your hands so you can either figure out what to do about Carla or even leave.”  She suggested the second option slowly and as if it had just occurred to her and that it would be a fine and normal reaction to his problems—to flee from them.

“Yeah.”  He bit his bottom lip.  “I feel like just blowin’ the joint, getting the hell away.”

“Really, that’s a good idea.”  Shane watched him finish off the Corona.

“Dad, I can help you.  Shay can come live with me.  Listen to that, the shower’s still going.  We both know what she’s doing in there.  One of your neighbors is going to be up in your business and is going to call Child Protection or the cops on you.  They’ll take Shay and stick him in Foster Care.”  Shane was following the script Carmen and Carmen’s cousin had laid out for her.

    “Nobody’s callin’ anybody.”

“Come on.  Are you serious?  The cops were here yesterday.  I talked to Shay.  He told me.”

    “Shay talks too much.”

“Who called?"  Shane asked.  Guessing, she said, "Next door?  Across the street?  Somebody did and they’ll do it again.”  Shane stared at him.  He picked up his bottle, put it to his lips, and turned it upside down.  It was empty.  “Could I have a beer?” she asked him.

Gabe walked to the refrigerator and took out two beers.  He popped one bottle for Shane and handed it to her and popped another for himself.  He stared out of the window as he drank.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
