Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"I think what I’m offering is a win-win situation for you.  You can leave Oregon.  There’s no job’s keeping you here.  Carla’s off in her own world.  Let me just take Shay and you can be done with it.  If you can get her in some program, if she gets better, Shay comes back up here.  If not, I’ll take care of him, Dad.  I want to."

Gabe drank his beer and then placed the bottle on the counter.  "What’s in it for me?"

The awkward topic of parenting Shay continued, but this time she added her trump card into the game–money "Well, first off, taking Shay off your hands; but I’ve got a little money.”  It sickened her that this is what it had come down to.  “If you sign off on me becoming his legal guardian, I could give you some money."

    "How much?"

    "Fifteen hundred."

Gabe lowered his head and shook it while laughing, his head dangled from his neck like a chicken that had just been slaughtered using a dull axe.  “Fifteen hundred’s gonna get me nowhere fast.   I’ve gotta live and if I leave, I need money to travel.”

They both heard the shower water turn off and a moment later, heard the towel rack fall off the wall and then Carla’s voice shouting, “Goddamn mother fucker.”

Shane looked at him.  “Wanna go get some lunch?  That diner we went to last time I was up here?  My treat?”  She needed to finalize the deal without Carla’s input for now.

“Yeah.  I don’t wanna deal with her.  She’ll be crazy fine until early evening, then the shit’ll hit the fan.”

“Is it like that every day?”

    “Yeah.”

“So when Shay is home, she’s coming down.”   Shane was unnerved by this.  She remembered how her own mother used to get stoned right in front of her.  The first time Shane had sucked in smoke and had bubbled the water in a bong, it had been her mom’s blue plastic one.  It had also been her mom who sat beside her and had taught her how to use it, dropping three ice cubes down the cylinder to keep Shane from burning her throat.  When Shane inhaled, it had been cool and refreshing then a swirl of smoke had filled her lungs.  As she recalled, she had been thirteen years old.  Shay couldn’t, shouldn’t have that life.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
