Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

He nodded.  “Yeah, he’s in his room, doing his homework or something.”

Shane shook her head.  One parent was stoned or figuring out how to get stoned and the other was just not interested.  She’d do everything she could to get him out of this situation.

“Let’s go.”  Gabe carried his beer out of the kitchen and grabbed his faded blue jean jacket that was thrown over a living room chair, as he walked to the front door.  Shane followed behind him, leaving her untouched beer on the kitchen table.  When they got back, she was sure that Carla would have emptied it into her stomach.

Shane closed the door behind her just as Carla came out of the bathroom and shouted, “Who the fuck is coming in here?” to the door that was closing.

As they walked down the path to the sidewalk, Shane continued talking over options.  It was essential that they get this over with as quickly as possible.  She didn’t want to leave Oregon City without a firm decision being made.  “You should get her in a program.  Let me take Shay at least until she gets through a program successfully.  I can give you, maybe two thousand.  I can come up with that, maybe, you know to help you get on your feet wherever you decide to go.”

Gabe McCutcheon scratched his stubbly chin with three curled fingers and contemplated the offer.  “Two thousand, huh?”

“Hello, Mother,” Helena said into her mobile phone when her mother picked up.

“Helena, darling.  What a pleasant surprise.”  Peggy didn’t give Helena an opening to speak.  She immediately launched into what had been on her mind.  “I’ve heard great things about you from Evelyn and Lucille over at Pew Charitable Trusts.  They tell me you’re being considered for a high position on their Board.  You, my dear, are according to them a breath of fresh air with your fundraising ideas.”

    “I’ve always supported that organization.”

“I’m just happy to see that you haven’t abandoned the high ideals the Peabodys have stood for since the beginning of the last century.  Service is imperative.”

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
