Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

“I’m being cautious for your own good,” Peggy said just as quickly.

Helena countered, pleading, “You have got to stop this."

“Let me say this, Helena.  Whatever you’re thinking about doing, I’ve already done.  I’ve lived a lot of years and in matters of love and lust I’ve made my fair share of mistakes–possibly every mistake in the book.  I am telling you these things for your own good.  I’m trying to spare you heartache, pain, embarrassment.  Learn from my experiences and heed my words.  That’s all I ask.”

“Mother, I swear . . .” Helena took a deep breath, blew out the air and finally said, “If I get hurt by her, embarrassment will be the least of my problems.

    “What are you saying?”

“You said that I’ve picked good girlfriends.  She’s not some dodgy character.  Dylan’s . . .”

Peggy interrupted, “And you’ve had a string of failed affairs.  The psychiatrist, the florist, the fashion designer, one artist after another, the linguist, the vinter, several chefs.  Shall I continue?”

“Affairs.  Even Tina was an affair.  I didn’t love her.”

“You had a nursery constructed for her baby.”

“She’s a friend.  If she visited, her child would have a place to stay.  I love children.  In fact-In fact, Bette Porter has stayed over with their daughter and used that room.  My point is, Tina and I were just having fun.  Dylan’s different.”

“I’ve heard that before.”  Peggy sighed into the phone.  Helena was always such a trial.

“I’m telling you, this-this isn’t your business.  I won’t have you thrusting yourself into my personal life.”  Helena’s voice softened almost secretively.  “She’s important to me, Mummy.  She means everything to me.”

Peggy listened, didn’t speak, was more surprised than she would have imagined.  Helena’s voice was faraway and dreamy.  It was a voice she’d never heard from her daughter.  It caused her to take pause, reflect, and finally say, “Good for you, Helena.”  It was as if the last few minutes hadn’t occurred when she said, “I want you and Dylan to come to my New Year’s Eve party in The City.  I expect you both to be there to ring in the new year.”  She wanted to get to know this woman who had allayed the restless heart that was her daughter.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
