Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    “That sounds . . .”

The apartment door opened and Peggy heard Helena’s breath catch and then heard her daughter speak joyfully.  “Welcome home, love.”  There was a break, then she heard the smack of a kiss, a longer pause, then Helena’s voice.  “Mother, I have to ring off.  I’ll make time for New York if I can.”

There was nothing for Peggy to say and no one to say it to as Helena had disconnected her call.

    11:40 am

Bette Porter’s forefinger rested against her cheek while her thumb along with her other fingers formed a cup for her chin.  She was listening to Justin Donovan talk about the paper he submitted to her for the Constructivism class she taught.

He was ranting and so she leaned in, crossed her arms on top of her desk, and rested on them. “Justin.  Justin, just a moment.  A couple of questions: Do you think your paper is objective and relevant?  Is there a real discussion about constructivism as guiding public and social issues or is it an overview of the genre?  I wasn’t asking for an overview.”

He wriggled in his seat, eyes enlarged, and he blinked uncomfortably.  “How can you say that?”  His voice was shrill for a guy with a five o’clock shadow just before Noon.  His hairy arms flailed about as he tried to explain himself.  “I’m not crazy and I’m not stupid Dean Porter.  I know you’re looking for a reason.”

    “A reason for what, Justin?”

“To toss me out on my ear.  I did my undergrad at CU and this is my second year of grad school.  I know how this place works.  My art is causing everyone problems.  This isn’t about my paper.”

“I didn’t ask you to come see me.  You came in during my office hours to discuss your paper.  Those were the first words you said—that you had a problem with my comments on your paper.”

He cocked his head and sat back in the chair, and crossed his leg.  What she said was true?  “Well, I’m prepared to deal with you on the other thing.”

Bette nodded tentatively.  What kind of student would put a gun made of soapstone to his head and call it art?  “Go ahead.”

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
