Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

“I don’t want to make pretty art.  I want people to think, to process life around them through art.  My whole point is to make this social statement.”

    “What was your social statement?”

“Obvious," he said as an answer.

Bette stared at him and waited.  It wasn’t obvious at all.

“It’s whatever people who saw it make of it.  I guess Lani tripped, but other students were cool with it.”

“Is that what you wanted people to take away—being cool with it?”

“Well, no.  I guess it should make them think.”

“About what?”  Bette was close to getting to the heart of this.

“About what if it had been real.  How would they have dealt with it?  What does it mean to have guns in the classroom or deal with something unexpected?”

“How is that art?  I’m not saying it isn’t art, but I want you to articulate how that performance piece of yours was art compared to oh . . . a guy walking into a classroom with a real gun and holding it up to his head and then laughing and saying, ‘just kidding?’  Can you tell me?”

    “It was soapstone.”

    “So?”

    Justin didn’t answer.

Bette shuffled through a stack of folders on her desk.  “Justin, I was looking at some of your work from last year.  There seems to be an abrupt change in your art and it alarms me that there is this violence attached to it now.  And I’ve talked to some of your former instructors.  I’ve been told that your writing is usually scholarly; that your professors have received well-developed and erudite papers from you.  I don’t see that in what you submitted to me.  It seemed like you phoned it in, like you didn’t want to be bothered in the first ten pages and a ranting jumble of ideas in the last ten.  Should I be insulted?”

“I think you’re wrong,” he said defensively.  “It’s a knowledgeable paper.”

“In parts.  As an overview, certainly.  That’s not what I asked for Justin.  I was very specific about what I wanted.  So, you do a provocative performance piece that has nothing to do with the sculpture class you are taking and papers that are, frankly, vacuous on one hand and-and rambling on the other.  What am I to think?  Is this a cry for help?”  Bette placed her forefinger over her lips, her thumb under her chin, and waited for his answer.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
