Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

Finally, Helena said, "So, I feel that it’s true, the past-life regression I experienced.  All I know is that wherever I’ve gone in my life, all over the world, I’ve always wanted to be near the water, near the ocean.  When I moved to Malibu, before I met you, I would sit on my deck and just stare out at the water, a sense of loneliness and melancholy would wash over me and I couldn’t explain it.  I had forgotten about that old woman and what she showed me."

Dylan squeezed her tight.  She never wanted Helena to feel lost and alone.

"Well, it’s a good fantasy if nothing else, yeah?" Helena stated.

"Uh-huh," Dylan said.  She had made light of it, but as she kissed the top of Helena’s head she thought about the burnt orange color of a tropical sunset.  Reddish-yellow had been her very favorite color since she was a child.

    * * * * * *

Bette had been on one of the treadmills at the Women’s Gym for ten minutes when Phyllis Kroll sashayed into the workout room dressed in what Bette could only describe as a circa 1980s, Jane Fonda, exercise outfit–a purple and green, diagonally-striped Danskin leotard with beige support hose tights, thick white socks rolled to ankle length, and a pair of heavy duty cross trainers on her feet.  Bette looked at her and thought, ‘Sweatin to the ’80s.’

"Hi, Bette," Phyllis called out and then walked across the gym to the treadmill.

Bette smiled and upped both the speed and incline.  "Hi.  Coming to workout?" Bette stated the obvious.

"Like clockwork.  Every day, same time.  I haven’t seen you here before.  It’s nice to see you taking advantage of one of the many perks of working at CU."

Bette hoped Phyllis would leave soon.  She had been in a good zone.  "I don’t have much time, but I needed to burn off some steam," she said by way of explanation.

"Yes, well, one thing I’ve learned in my years of academia: you need to find some ‘me’ time."

"Oh, I get that at home with my partner and daughter."

"I’m not talking about quality family time, Bette.  You have to take time just for yourself, to do something that you solely love.  If I didn’t have my workouts and racquetball, this job and my husband would drive me to the insane asylum."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
