Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"You play racquetball," Bette asked with labored breathing.  She couldn’t imagine it.

"Yes.  Would you like to play?  One-Up?  I have a second racquet in my locker.  Let’s say thirty minutes from now."  She looked at the enormous schoolhouse clock on the wall.

Bette couldn’t very well say no to her boss.  "Uh, sure.  I’ll be finished on this in a few minutes and then I’ll reserve a court."

    "Not necessary."  Phyllis laughed.

"Oh, you were going to play.  You’ve booked already?"

    "No."

Bette shrugged awkwardly as she did a fast walk on the treadmill.  "Not many people wanting to play at this time?"

Phyllis looked at her in a way that said ‘aren’t you the most precious thing.  Sweet, naïve Bette.’  "I am the Executive Vice Chancellor–that comes with its own particular brand of perks.  I’ll see you in thirty."  Phyllis turned from Bette and jogged over to the indoor track that surrounded the gym.  Out of nowhere, she produced a lavender colored, terry cloth headband and stuck it over her head, adjusting it on her forehead, and then took off running around the track.

Bette raised the speed of her brisk walk to a full run and thought it might be fun and easy to release some aggression and tension and kick a little Jane Fonda butt on the racquetball court.

Thirty minutes later, Bette opened the door to the court where Phyllis waited.  Bette was expecting to see the 1980s throwback, but Phyllis was in a tight, gray and black, Supplex tank top, a matching pair of shorts, thin athletic socks, and racquetball shoes.  Phyllis turned and looked at Bette.  "Oh, good.  Ready?"

Bette dropped her bag next to Phyllis’ things by the door.  "Uh . . .  yeah."  She opened her duffle bag, found a scrunchie and pulled her hair into a loose ponytail.  "You changed?"  Bette spotted the extra racquet and picked it up, took a few swings in the air to warm up.

"Of course.  Can’t play well if you’re not dressed for it, can you?"  Phyllis made a point of giving Bette the once over.  Bette was wearing the same Capri exercise pants and pink and red tank top that she had on when she was on the treadmill.  She was wearing the same shoes, too.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
