Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    "Right."

"So you wanna warm up first?"  Phyllis lobbed the ball to Bette who sent it sailing to the front wall.

It had been a few years since Bette had picked up a racquet.  She still remembered the rules and counted on poor form from Phyllis to get her to the end of play as the victor.  She made a few more serves and shots, finding her sweet spot at the corner of the right front wall, where it bounced off, hit the side wall, and moved unexpectedly against the left side wall.  If she could throw Phyllis off with shots like that, she’d have time to prepare for Phyllis return, playing offensively while her boss would be forced to be on the defense.

"Nice shot."  Something in Phyllis’ voice was a tad patronizing.  "Let’s play," Phyllis spoke.

    12:45pm

Henry opened his car door and passed the pizza box to Stephanie who was in the passenger’s seat.  "It’s hot," he said as he slipped behind the wheel.  "I’m glad I thought to order ahead.  Oh, there’s a menu on top of the box.  You’ll want that.  This pizza is some of the best in LA and it’s not far from your place."

    "Okay."

"So we’re all set."  He turned the car on and pulled out of his space.  He drove down Abbott-Kinney and made a right onto Lincoln.  "All righty then.  Let’s get to your place for some pizza.  Oh, hey, I’ve got beer in the back."  He shot her a conspiratorial smile.

"Don’t you have to go back to work?"

"Dr. Frazier-Jones is filling in on my cases today.  I don’t think I’d be in the proper state of mind to make life-changing decisions for my patients when I’m worried about you."

"Oh, Henry.  You’re so dedicated and so responsible.  Your patients and their families have nothing to be concerned about.  You’re their hero."

Henry faced front, watching the slow and go traffic in front of him on Lincoln Boulevard, but he grinned.  "Heh, I don’t know.  It’s not like I’m a fireman.  Oh," he glanced over at her and continued, "Did I tell you when I was a kid, even up through high school, I kinda wanted to be a fireman.  I thought that was the coolest job–saving people.  I could imagine myself on a ladder, with this beautiful woman draped over my shoulder as I climbed down and then administered mouth-to-mouth to bring her from the brink of death.  God.  . ."  He laughed.  "I remember in my little boy fantasy hearing people shout out, "‘He’s a hero.  He’s a hero.’ And me saying, ‘just doin’ my job, folks.’"

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
