Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"Religion?"  He stopped what he was doing and looked up at her.

"Yeah.  Like what church do you go to?  What do you practice?"

He laughed.  "Well, I practice medicine."  When Stephanie sighed and cocked her head, he said, "I don’t go to church.  I spend time with Mikey on Sundays usually and I try to find activities for him–paintball, rock climbing, taking a long hike in Griffith Park, rollerblading on the boardwalk down here.  Something fun for him, then we have lunch, maybe go to an arcade or a movie.  By seven I have to get him back to my ex’s place."

"You can’t find time for church during the whole day?"

He shrugged and picked up the outside part of the lock.  "I wouldn’t even know where to go.  My mom never took me to a church.  She said it was a waste of money and we didn’t need some man standing in a robe telling us how to be good people.  She thought being good should come naturally.  I tend to agree.  I think I’m a good person even though I’m not religious."  He stopped his work again and looked at her.  "And let me tell you, Steph, you don’t work in my field and not come to believe in something greater than yourself.  I’ve witnessed miracles and I’ve done what I thought was impossible.  I know I was guided.  I don’t need a couple of hours on Sunday of someone telling me the parable of the burning bush to get closer to my spirituality."

"So you look down on people who go to Church?"  Stephanie turned in her chair and placed one arm on the back of it.

"Oh, no," he said incredulously.  "Definitely not.  I advise the families of my patients to seek solace in their faith.  Sometimes, that’s all people have.  They need the support of their communities and their belief in a higher being to see them through.  I’ve heard so many prayers over the years, people pleading and bargaining with God.  It helps them.  Even Bette, if you didn’t know, is very spiritual.  She used to sit at Tina’s side all day long and just talk to God and talk about her beliefs and how she was having a hard time accepting what was happening in her life.  She wasn’t joking, fooling around, passing the time.  Bette, like so many of the loved ones I deal with, was dead serious.  They are begging God to intervene on their behalf because they know medicine and technology can only do so much."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
