Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    "But, it’s not for you."

"Would it be all right if I simply said that I see God in my work every day?"

    "Have you been baptized?"

    "No."

    "So you haven’t been saved?"

"I’m not even sure what that is, but no, I haven’t.  I’m a decent guy, though, Steph.  I’m a good person who doesn’t have any ill will toward anyone."

She nodded and went back to her book while he worked on the lock.

    * * * * *

Shane pulled a twenty out of her wallet and dropped it on the table, stood up, and so did Gabriel McCutcheon.  He looked at the twenty, then looked at the bill the waitress had dropped off.  "This is like 13.47 total.  You’re leaving a tip of over six bucks?  You got a money tree growing down there in LA?"

"Oh, I didn’t’ realize," Shane lied.  "I’ll get change."

Gabe said, "I’ll do it.  He fisted the bill in his hand and walked to the cashier.  "I’ll meet you outside."

Shane walked to the glass door, opened it and waited on the sidewalk for her father.  She pulled her cigarette pack from her pocket and pulled out one cig which she lit as she watched her father get the change and then put a tip on the table.  He moved with purpose and a swagger, comfortable in his skin.  He looked sober and sounded sober to Shane.  She had needed him relaxed; now she needed him steady.

Gabe scoffed when he dropped the money down onto their table.  "Almost seven bucks in a tip," he said to himself.  He paid for their lunch and left her what he deemed appropriate–a dollar fifty.  It was more than ten percent if you excluded the tax.  He put the remainder of the money in his pocket.

He joined Shane outside and they walked down the street that was now familiar to her.  She had walked this with her father when she had visited him a couple of months ago.  "So Dad, we’re set."

    "Yeah."

"I’m gonna need Shay’s health records, you know vaccinations and stuff."  Shane tried to recall everything Carmen’s cousin, the social worker had told her.  "Uh. . . and his school records will have to be transferred.  I can get him into Crescent Heights, that’s the neighborhood school near my place."  Shane couldn’t believe the things coming out of her mouth.  She sounded like a responsible parent, not a former street prostitute paying for shelter and cocaine by giving hand and blowjobs to gay men.  "We’ve got a lot to get done."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
