Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    “You okay?” Phyllis asked.

“Just serve.”  Bette moved into position.

Phyllis bounced the ball and served it to the wall.  The Executive Vice Chancellor was on top of her game and as soon as the ball sailed past the short line, she was out of the service zone.  Bette was focused as well and a rally began.  Both women ran the width and length of the court, trying every special shot they could to throw the other off balance.  The ball had been in play and had bounced off the side and front walls numerous times as it went back and forth between them.   Phyllis tricked her with a spectacular shot into the corner that nearly died in the front.  It was impossible for Bette to predict where it would go.

    "Damn it," she said.

Back in place for Phyllis’ next serve, Bette with her lower lip out, blew air upward to circulate over her face.  Wisps of hair that had fallen from her ponytail hung wildly around her face.  She wiped her forehead with the back of her hand, while waiting for Phyllis.

Suddenly, the ball was moving again and Phyllis took that moment immediately following her serve to say, "The Justin Donovan incident isn’t going away.  What do you intend to do about it?"

Bette swung her racquet and connected beautifully with the ball.  "I’ve talked to him.  He understands the seriousness of his actions.  I think he’d be willing to accept a brief suspension and he’s considering psychiatric evaluation," she said stretching the truth.

Phyllis and Bette continued playing, grunting as they attacked the ball and in between speaking breathlessly about the problem.

"What doesn’t look good is that you’re a new Dean.  The Board worries that you have no control."

"I don’t know how I could have controlled what went on in that classroom."  Bette shot to the corner.

"It’s the responsibility of the Dean to have eyes in the back of his/her head; really everywhere.  Where you can’t be, you should have people keeping you informed."  Phyllis met Bette’s challenging shot with one of her own.

    "Spies?"

"Your T.A., your favorite students.  For goodness’ sake, Bette, your faculty.  Have you formed a bond with your staff?  This is the job of the Dean–to form a cohesive department."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
