Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

“What do you suggest?  A retreat?” Bette asked as she sent the ball forward making another difficult shot for Phyllis to meet.  "Faculty can air their grievances.  We could have a facilitator."

“Honestly, Bette, one of the reasons we. . . well I. . . was so excited about you coming to us was your reputation as a ball buster.”

“That’s not me.  I am not a ball buster.  I most definitely am not.”

“Perhaps that was too strong a term," Phyllis said as she sent the ball sailing across the room to the wall.  "Not that I find anything wrong with that term.  I personally like being known as that.  I’m strong, have conviction about what needs to be done, and sometimes, these men get their testicles squeezed.  They might not like it, but too bad.  My point is that you have this reputation as a strong, no nonsense personality.  You took on Franklin Phillips.  The problems in The Arts department can be solved with you taking a hard line with your faculty.  You know, we need to pluck out the bad seeds."  Phyllis said.    She missed the ball that traveled quickly to a spot she hadn’t predicted.  Suddenly her game was going in the proverbial toilet.  Phyllis went on to say, "Who are the problems?  Where is the conflict?  Who’s at fault for the lack of morale?  I could guess."  Phyllis glanced over at her quickly, judging her and then said, "Our policies have changed at the university.  Tenure doesn’t mean forever any longer.  We have a procedure for that now–with older faculty hanging on out of habit even when they’re suffering from some sort of dementia or senility we couldn’t afford to lose students because of it.  If you’re blatantly insane, have Alzheimer’s, continue to be politically incorrect using ‘hate’ words for example, or just a slacker who feels he has paid his dues so now just sits around collecting a check and the perks of this organization, we won’t have it.  If you have staff not living up to our standards, he or she is out.  Just tell us what you’ve noticed and an investigation can proceed."

The rally ended when Phyllis just couldn’t keep up.  Her mind was now on The Arts department.  Also, the more the Executive Vice-Chancellor spoke, the angrier Bette had become and her game improved exponentially.   "Game," Bette said with little enthusiasm for her win.  She walked to the side and dropped the racquet.  "I’ve got to shower and get dressed.  I have a couple more meetings then I have to leave campus."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
