Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B
The ball traveled from one woman to the wall, to the floor, and to the other woman, then back in a continuous cycle, an energetic rally. Their panting from exertion, the sound of the rubber ball making contact, the whoosh of racquet in the air, and the squeak of the soles of their shoes on the floor could be heard, but what was loudest was the tension on the court.
Bette swung and went for a shot that sent the ball up to the ceiling and back down to hit the front wall, then bounce off the floor and lose its momentum at the side. Phyllis couldn’t get to it.
It was Bette’s turn to serve. As soon as she did, she made her point. "There’s some resistance to a unified department. A lot of office politics and I would say that the displeasure is only somewhat directed at me. Many are, to be frank, disheartened by some of CU’s policies and priorities."
Phyllis fired back and then said, "It’s your job to keep the complaints to a minimum. No one gets everything they want. You see, Bette, I met with the Board this morning. It’s not just the business with Justin Donovan. The problem in the Arts is greater. It’s been an ongoing issue and I really thought bringing in an outsider would change the dynamic of the department. The morale is low, the grievances and criticism are high."
Bette turned and shot Phyllis a look. "You-you can’t possibly blame me for something that is so-so-so apparently systemic to the department. I certainly don’t believe there’s been a dereliction of duty on my part." The ball nearly sailed by Bette, but she got to it and sent it slamming hard and fast to bounce quickly from the ball and down the center. Phyllis hadn’t expected it there and missed it. Bette smirked.
"No," Phyllis said weakly. "We don’t blame you per se."
The women re-positioned themselves on the floor and Bette bounced the ball a few times preparing for her serve. "Just spill it, Phyllis. What do you and the Board have in mind?"
Phyllis sighed. This was not where she wanted to have a discussion about the future of the Arts department. "We have to figure out how to fix The Arts. It’s certainly not you. We’re in full agreement with you about this problem being in the very guts of the department." She swung and missed. Bette set up her serve, bouncing the ball twice, then put the ball in play, and a rally ensued. "The Board is nothing but pleased with you. You have brought in an incredible amount of donor funds this semester–much more than we would have dreamed possible last year. For the first time in decades, we’re actually competing with UCLA, the other UCs in California, and USC for visitors, donors, and reputation. You did this in just months. We’re ecstatic about that. You’re the breath of fresh air that CU needed in the department, however, the problems remain.”

‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!
I am awed. Incredible plotting, great pacing, wonderful imagery. And so hot. Thanks so much for this incredible chapter.

Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)
OMG!!!!!! I miss this story! Pretty please continue!
Wow I just finished reading. I agree with everyone. If you can please continue this.
Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.
What can I Say – wow – great update thank you so much.
A fan fiction timeline: In the beginning: Bring it all on. … After Portia: It’s done been broughten.
Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.
I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
You have to finish this! I read this entire series in 6 weeks, and can’t wait to see what happens in the end. So much better than the show.
